FOOTBALL Former Spartan quarterbacks enjoyed Week 1 success

There are four former Michigan State quarterbacks playing college football, all of them enjoyed a win with their current team.

Payton Thorne led Auburn in a 73-3 mauling of Alabama A&M, completing 13 of 21 passes for 322 yards with four passing touchdowns. Thorne also rushed for 49 yards on four carries and one rushing touchdown.

In a night cap blowout, Sam Leavitt and the Arizona Sun Devils beat the Wyoming Cowboys 48-7. Leavitt threw for 258 yards on 14 of 22 pass attempts, including two passing scores. Leavitt added 47 yards on eight carries.

Noah Kim (Coastal Carolina) and Katin Houser (East Carolina) saw game action as well in back-up roles. Kim threw one pass for a nine yard touchdown along with three carries for seven yards in the Chanticleers 55-27 victory over Jacksonville State. In East Carolina’s 42-3 season opener win versus Norfolk State, Houser went 3-3 for 50 yards and was sacked once for a 10 yard loss.

It will be interesting to keep tabs on all four quarterbacks in 2024.

FOOTBALL Article: Maryland an even bigger challenge with three long-term injuries announced.

Jonathan Smith had his weekly press conference today, and he certainly acknowledged the type of team Maryland has. The Terrapins destroyed UConn 50-7 on Saturday. With injuries to Alante Brown, Khalil Majeed and Dillon Tatum, things look even more difficult.

Despite that, Smith still talked about reasons for optimism and how they are going to improve in areas where it is needed most.
