MEN'S BASKETBALL Kur Teng named MVP at Moneyball, team wins championship

Via the Lansing State Journal, incoming MSU freshman Kur Teng was named the Moneyball MVP as his team won the championship last night.

The LSJ's Nathaniel Bott was there and got some quotes (link: https://www.lansingstatejournal.com...fellas-to-moneyball-pro-am-title/74642349007/)

"It feels good just playing in front of the fans and it's my first rodeo, but it was a lot of fun to get a sneak peek of what's to come," Teng said Thursday night. "I'm going to be talking trash the rest of the summer, man, but I'm just happy to get out of here with the win. In our last timeout, my guys just told me to go get the ball and I came off a screen and from there, it's just 'do what I do.' "

Teng delivered the biggest shot of the tournament — a 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock with less than a minute to play to give Goodfellas the lead.

MSU incoming transfer big man Szymon Zapala was also on the team and battled hard vs Jaxon Kohler.

As Bott mentioned, MSU's players will now prepare for an overseas trip to Spain, Aug. 13-22.

UPDATE Mel Tucker files suit against Michigan State University

The Mel Tucker saga isn't over yet. In an unsurprising move (in my opinion), Kenny Jacoby of USA TODAY has reported that "former Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker has filed a lawsuit on Wednesday alleging the university and its leaders wrongfully terminated and defamed him amid a sexual harassment scandal last fall."

According to Jacoby, "The 75-page lawsuit filed in federal court in Michigan accuses the university of conducting an 'improper, biased, and sham investigation' designed to fire him, violating his right to due process. Tucker, a Black man, also accuses school officials of discriminating against him based on his race."

The lawsuit does not specify an exact dollar amount, but seeks compensation.

OFF TOPIC: Recommendation, not a bitch

Something for the Spartans Illustrated staff to consider.

Many of us are on the road, on airplanes, etc. It would be nice to have your player interviews, coaching interviews, etc. on video so we can listen instead of having to read. I just dont have time to read the articles. So I find myself going to UTUBE and watching/listening to the player interviews that way. Seem like you could push out more content that way as well.

HOCKEY Two more! Defensemen Jonas Kemps and Chase Reid have committed to MSU...

US NTDP defender Jonas Kemps has committed to Michigan State! The 6’4 and 170 lbs defender put up 39 points in 60 games for the Anaheim Jr. Ducks 15U team this season.

Chase Reid has committed to Michigan State. The 6’0 and 161 lbs defender put up 62 points in 68 games for Victory Honda 16U this year, even suiting up for 10 games with the Waterloo Blackhawks of the USHL.

FOOTBALL MSU's Cal Haladay, linebackers looking to 'take charge' this season

Heading into Jonathan Smith’s first season at the helm for Michigan State, depth is a question mark for certain positions groups. One position where the depth really isn’t a concern is linebacker.

Cal Haladay is back for his fifth season at Michigan State to lead the way after accumulating over 300 tackles in the last three years.

“We've got a good group of guys (in the linebackers room),” Haladay said on Tuesday. “I think anybody can go on the field and produce.”

FOOTBALL Michigan State opens 2024 fall camp with Jonathan Smith at the helm

The 2024 football season is now upon us. Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith and the Spartans opened preseason camp on Tuesday, which marked the first time Smith was at the helm of the program for fall camp practices.

After going through spring practices, and leading the Spartans through a busy offseason that included many departures and additions to the roster, Smith got a chance to see his full 2024 squad on the practice field for the first time.

Smith liked what he saw from his team on day one of fall camp, but he knows it is just the beginning.

"Great to get started, day one," Smith said. "(It was) as expected, but good energy. The guys were flying around pretty good. Obviously, we're just in some helmets and spiders, but I was really pleased with what it looked like today.

“I thought it was crisp. You could tell we went through spring ball and they had a good summer. A lot of guys got bigger, faster and stronger, more comfortable in the scheme, and I thought that showed up in day one.”

BREAKING NEWS Big Ten Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament host sites through 2028 announced

The Men's and Women's Tournament will be in Indy this upcoming season before the Men head to Chicago in 2026 and the Women stay in Indy. Then in 2027 the Women head to Vegas while the Men return to Indy. In 2028, Detroit will finally play host to the Tourney when the Women play there while the men head to Vegas. That may suggest a 2029 BTT for the Men in Detroit, though.
