OTHER MSU SPORTS Volleyball Signing Day Hub 2024

1731595347886.png

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State head volleyball coach Leah Johnson announced the third signing class of her tenure Wednesday on National Signing Day. The Spartans covered all of their bases in the Class of 2025 signing a setter, libero, middle blocker and outside hitter. MSU once again tapped into its overseas contacts with the additions of setter Kalea Norton (Auckland, New Zealand) and outside hitter Caroline Formankova (Slany, Czech Republic), in addition to domestic signees libero Olivia Durst (Brookfield, Wis.) and middle blocker Leela Ormsby (Billings, Mont.).

Olivia Durst, signing day, volleyball, 2024

Durst is a three-time Wisconsin state champion at Divine Savior Holy Angels, a two-time All-State honoree, a two-time All-State tournament selection and a three-time Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association academic honoree … Durst was named All-Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2024 … Ranked as the No. 3 player in Wisconsin for 2025.
“Liv is such a fun athlete," said Johnson. "She’s played most of her career as an outsider hitter while playing competitive soccer, so she’s got fast feet and makes pretty spectacular defensive moves. We knew pretty quickly when she made the transition to libero that she was going to be elite. She’s won at the highest level every step of her career, a mentality that will serve her well.”
I chose Michigan State because the coaches and players treat me like family and not just a volleyball player. Stepping on campus felt natural and like home. I love that this program pushes you to be your best but also understands your limits.
Olivia Durst
Kalea Norton

Kalea Norton, signing day, volleyball, 2024

Norton was the U19 Player of the Year in New Zealand is 2023-24 … Played with the New Zealand Junior Women's National Team … At 16 years old played with the top women's team in New Zealand “Volley Ferns” on an international tour in Chile … Also an accomplished beach volleyball player in New Zealand in the same mold as current Spartan Taylah Holdem … Played for the New Zealand A Women's beach volleyball squad and on the New Zealand women's pro tour.
“We first heard about Kalea through our current Spartan Taylah Holdem,” said Johnson. "She was playing in high-level women’s leagues at the age of 15 in New Zealand. She’s a superb athlete, having played a variety of sports throughout her career. Kalea is a fast mover and competitive as can be. She does all the little things you need to do to be great.”
I chose MSU because they believed in a girl from New Zealand and offered me an incredible opportunity. Right from our first conversation I felt their passion and dedication to volleyball. The MSU volleyball culture thrives on excellence, growth and unity which is exactly where I want to be. Surrounded by people who push each other to improve.
Kalea Norton
Leela Orsmby

Leela Ormsby, signing day, volleyball, 2024

Ormsby is the all-time record holder in Montana for career blocks with 421 as of Oct. 31 breaking a record that stood since 2003 … Finishes interscholastic career as the all-time leader in blocks and hitting percentage at Billings Senior High School … A two-time first team All-State selection (with 2024 All-State teams yet to be announced) … Led Billings Senior to a state champion ship in 2022 … Four-time blocks per set leader in Montana … Invited to the USA Volleyball National Development program on four occasions as one of three players from the state of Montana to ever attend.
“Leela is one of the most natural blockers I have recruited," said Johnson. "She’s got great instincts at the net. She’s played just about every position along the net. She’s going to bring a heavy arm and versatility to the gym. Leela has an elite maturity and mindset about her that’s going to make adapting to the B1G a smoother transition for her.”
I chose MSU because of the immediate connection I felt to the entire coaching staff. I'm beyond excited for the program being built with them and I can't wait to be a part of it. I believe in this program and feel blessed because they believe in me. The campus already feels like home, and I'm ready to serve for these coaches, grow with my future teammates and honor MSU.
Leela Orsmby
Caroline Formankova

Caroline Formankova, signing day, 2024, volleyball

Formankova played with the Czech Republic U20 and U23 teams at the 2024 European Championships where she played against current Spartan Karolina Staniszewska at U23s … Currently playing for VK Dukla Liberec in the Czech Republic Extraliga … Also played for VK Selmy Brno.
“Caroline bleeds green," said Johnson. "She’s a dual citizen, with her mother being from right here in East Lansing. She’s played on the international scene for quite some time and is strong, fiery and powerful. She’s got a ton of experience at the opposite position and puts up a big block. This has been a long time in the making and we are so excited to officially welcome her to the Spartan family.”
It has always been my dream to play college volleyball and ever since I first talked to the coaching staff I knew I was going to choose MSU. Stepping on campus felt like coming home, just on the other side of the world.

MEN'S BASKETBALL USA Today

I personally feel like this assessment of MSU basketball is correct and on-point. The only omission is that MSU was a pretty realistic FF team in 2020 if not for COVID.

RECRUITING 2025 four-star forward Cam Ward commits to Michigan State men's basketball

The Michigan State men's basketball program has landed its second commit of the 2025 class, as four-star small forward/power forward Cam Ward announced his pledge to the Spartans on Tuesday.

Ward has close to 30 scholarship offers in his recruitment and ranks as the No. 28 small forward and the No. 99 overall prospect in the 2025 cycle.

More on Ward here:

RECRUITING UPDATE: SG/SF Jordan Scott COMMITS to MSU, his Strengths, Weaknesses, and his Famous Mom

Scott commits to MSU, an update of Strengths, weaknesses, and his famous Mom

JORDAN SCOTT BIO:

Position
: Wing Forward
Height/Weight: 6'7, 191 pounds.
Home: South Lakes High School, Reston, Virginia
Final Three Schools: Maryland, Virginia Tech, and Michigan State.

SCOTTS RECRUITING NEEDS:
  1. I want a place that works me; I'm big on hard work.
  2. A school that makes me better on and off the court.
  3. They have to have good food.
  4. How a team conducts practices

STRENGTHS

1. The most translatable part of Scott's game is his three-point shooting. He's not a pure shooter but made almost 36% of his attempts on high-volume (7+) attempts per game with a quick release.

2. He is an active wing rebounder.

3. On the defensive end, he has active hands and a nose for the ball (2.6 steals per game).

4. He understands how to play within the team concept, has a good feel for the game, and lets the game come to him.

5. Scott is a willing passer and reliable decision-maker with the ball in his hands (2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio in UA Rise play).

6. He likes to take smaller defenders into the mid-post, where he can utilize his size to shoot over the top of them.

WEAKNESSES

1. He's undeveloped physically, can struggle to play through contact, and doesn't always assert himself as a top prospect should.

2. Scott doesn't put much pressure on the rim.

3. He shows very little creativity or playmaking as a ball handler.

4. He's farther away physically than most four-star prospects and is going to require some patience before he can build up his body to play through the level of contact he's going to see at the next level.

5. His upside is more long-term rather than immediate.

JORDAN SCOTT'S FAMOUS MOM: Christy Winters-Scott

Basketball career

Winters-Scott was a Hall of Fame player at the University of Maryland. She also coached at Georgetown from 2004–2005 and at South Lakes High School.

Current work
Winters-Scott is a basketball color analyst for ESPN, FSN, The Big Ten Network, Monumental Sports Network, and Raycom Sports. She also broadcasts Mystics TV and Wizards games.

FOOTBALL Dr. G&W's Week 12 Preview (Bad Betting Advice): I-L-L Communication

The Spartans are back in action this week and I am suddenly feeling a lot better about the season. As I looked deeper into some of the numbers, the better I felt. Michigan State is a slight underdog this week, and my computer is picking a 6-point loss, but I think MSU has a good shot.

As I explain in the piece, there is a ton of potential upside in this week's game and very little downside. A win could put MSU on a solid trajectory for a nicer than expected bowl game. A loss would stink, but the Spartan's will still have a great chance to get to .500, make a bowl, and over achieve.

Coming off a bye week, this is a good position to be in.

As for the theme, I am honestly surprised that I haven't pulled this one out for previous match-ups with the Illini. This one has fun.

Enjoy!

OFF TOPIC: Advice and recommendations on grilling a filet mignon

Earlier today I was out shopping and I saw a beautiful filet mignon in the meat isle at Whole Foods. I couldn't resist and pulled the trigger. I think it was about $40. Here's the thing -- I am not good at cooking stakes on my own. I want to cook it outside on my Weber. Any tips on preparation and execution? I'm a medium well guy, not into rare. TIA

MEN'S BASKETBALL KU loss

I am very disappointed because this was a game we could have won. But you will not win many games shooting 12.5% from the 3 point line. This looks like a carry over from last year. Akins and Booker disappeared- how much leash will they have? Booker sat with 0 points and Akins only took 8 shots and 2 points. Is it lack of confidence?

Former Duke star Kyle Singler's cryptic Instagram post saying he fears for his life has drawn an outpouring of concern and support from former teammates and others.

Singler, 36, spoke slowly and was shirtless in the short video, which was posted Tuesday morning.

"I have been mistreated and abused, neglected, made into a mental example," Singler said. "And I fear for my life every day. And people in my community make me look out as if I'm going to be someone that's going to be a problem and make things difficult for people when I'm only trying to be helpful.

"I feel like I have a certain way about myself and strength and purpose that does not get valued or get treated properly."

The video cut off abruptly after about 90 seconds. It was shared more than 1,200 times in the 12 hours after it was posted.

Several NBA players responded.

Kevin Love of the Miami Heat wrote, "I love you Kyle. Hit me whenever. Please."

Veteran guard Isaiah Thomas said: "Here for you bro! Always and forever."

Philadelphia 76ers center Andre Drummond added, "You aren't alone brother! I'm here for you."

Many of those who responded included Duke men's basketball and the NBA in their comments, hoping to get their attention.

Singler was on Duke's 2010 national championship team and was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament.

He posted another video Tuesday afternoon. He repeated grievances from the first post but seemed more stable.

Singler was the 33rd pick in the 2011 draft and started his career overseas before playing in the NBA. He played three seasons for the Detroit Pistons, who drafted him, and was on the All-Rookie second team in 2013. He played parts of four seasons for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Duke basketball, the Thunder and the National Basketball Players Association did not immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press.
