OFF TOPIC: Captain Kirk

I'm sure most of you are not watching Rangers Braves in the Sunday Night Baseball on the four letter. Although if you're a baseball fan you might be (two amazing teams).

But anyway, they had Captain Kirk in the booth for a few innings. And he is just so perfect. He is such a great ambassador for our school. Even if he didn't say a thing about MSU in the interview (it's not like he abandoned his first wife and child like the golden boy of the football media, like one I could reference). He is everything one should want to represent them.

He will be a state of Michigan senator before it's all over, just watch.

Scheme Thoughts and Discussion...and Questions?

Good Morning...some first rip thoughts on what I saw from the Spring Showcase. I welcome any thoughts or questions that I can address here, or in my film room later in the week.
  • From a personnel standpoint, I echo what has been said elsewhere that Marsh flashed, and Chiles showed promise
  • Offense had a lot of scissors concepts, used it to threaten the middle of the field more than MSU has in recent years
  • MSU used a lot of motion to "stack" receivers to create space
  • MSU is struggling a bit to adjust to adjust to a 3-4 on defense...played more man on the outside than before, but the inside linebackers and safeties appeared at first glance to be a mess
  • I think run defense may be a bit of an issue. I think the offensive line is improved, but not to the point where the cutback lanes on outside zone are as open as they were on Carter's first TD
  • I liked the variance of route concepts...every play stressed multiple levels of the defense, and gave the QB a number of options. I thought Chiles and Schuster both got through their progressions sharply
What are your thoughts/feelings?

OTHER MSU SPORTS Softball Weekend Recap against Illinois

Friday

Beshears Grand Slam Propels Spartan Offense in Loss

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sophomore Britain Beshears provided a late spark in Michigan State softball's 8-6 loss to Illinois on Friday afternoon at Secchia Stadium. Beshears' fifth inning grand slam brought the Spartans back within one run, 7-6, heading into the late stages of the game.

MSU moves to 15-27 (2-13 B1G) following a loss, while the Illini improve to 17-25 (4-10 B1G).

Beshears finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a career-high tying four RBI. Friday's long ball was Beshears' 12th of the season to move her into a tie for fourth in program history for single season home runs, tying Caitlin Mahoney (12, 2007).

Senior Jenae Wash matched Beshears with a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 with her third home run of the season in the second inning. Sophomore Hannah Hawley reached three times with a sun ball single and two walks. Also with hits for MSU were senior Anna Fox, sophomore Kayla Bane who doubled and senior Alexis Ross. Ross swiped her 17th base of the season.

Junior Madison Taylor (3-11) made the start in the circle for MSU and struck out six in 4.1 innings, allowing five earned runs. Taylor was relieved by senior Ashlyn Roberts and senior Liv Grey. Grey struck out one in 2.1 innings of relief.

Illinois started the night strong taking a quick 4-0 lead over the Spartans with back-to-back two run innings in the first and second frames.

Wash got the Spartans on the board for the first time on Friday with an opposite field solo homer to lead off the bottom of the second inning.

After back-to-back scoreless innings in the circle by Taylor, Illinois tacked on three runs in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead over Michigan State. Stevie Meade's sacrifice fly put the Illini ahead 5-1, but an errant throw brought an additional run around to score. A bases loaded hit by pitch pushed a third run across for Illinois.

Bane led-off the bottom of the fifth with a double down the left field line, but the Spartans faced their final out of the inning with bases loaded. Senior Collette Allen and Hawley walked to put three on for junior Macy Lee. Lee grounded a ball to the left side of the infield, but an error by the Illini shortstop extended the inning and allowed a run to score. With the inning extended, Beshears made the most of the opportunity slugging a ball over the fence in center for her first career grand slam. Beshears' slam cut the Spartan deficit to 7-6 heading into the sixth.

A trio of shallow singles provided Illinois with an insurance run in the seventh, giving the Illini an 8-6 advantage over MSU.

Down to its final opportunities of the night, Michigan State stranded a pair of base runners in each of the last two innings. After a bunt single and steal by Ross in the sixth, Illinois intentionally walked the dangerous hitting Hawley to prevent Ross from scoring on a base hit.

Saturday

Softball Outlasts Late Rally, Defeats Illinois on Alumni Day

EAST LANSING, Mich. – With members of the 2004 B1G Tournament Championship team in attendance, Michigan State softball held on for a 6-5 victory over Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Secchia Stadium.

MSU improves to 16-27 (3-13 B1G) with the win while the Illini fall to 17-26 (4-11 B1G). Saturday's win helps the Spartans stay in the fight for a spot in the 2024 B1G Tournament, where 12 of 14 teams in the league qualify. Michigan State (3-13 B1G) is currently battling Iowa (4-10), Illinois (4-11) and Maryland (4-12) for one of the final spots.

Senior Liv Grey (10-11) pitched her seventh complete game of the season allowing two earned runs over seven innings in the circle. After a rocky first inning, Grey settled in to strike out five Illini batters.

The Spartan defense committed five errors while Illinois scattered 10 hits and left 13 runners on base.

Junior Macy Lee led Michigan State with two RBI and was one of six Spartans to record hits on Saturday. Sophomores Sydney Doloszycki and Hannah Hawley provided extra-base hits with Doloszycki tripling and Hawley's smoking her 11th double of the season off the center field fence. Doloszycki's triple was just the second triple of the season for MSU.

Senior Jenae Wash and sophomore Britain Beshears each reached base twice via single and walk, while junior Mik Anthony and Hawley reached three times. Anthony singled and walked twice, while Hawley drew a walk and hit by pitch in addition to her aforementioned double. Sophomore Hailey Bila and senior Alexis Ross stole bases for the Spartans in game two.

Sides traded runs in the first after Illinois started the scoring with a bases loaded walk. Michigan State responded in the home half using a lead-off double by Hawley, a sacrifice bunt by Doloszycki and a Lee sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

With runners on first and third in the second inning, MSU took the lead on a double steal attempt. Though Anthony was caught stealing on the play, Wash sprinted home to give the Spartans a 2-1 advantage.

Back-to-back-to-back two out singles pushed a pair of runs across for Michigan State in the third. Lee got things started with a single just out of reach of the Illini shortstop before Beshears and Wash each drove in one on singles to center.

Illinois cut MSU's lead to one, 4-3, as two runners scored in the fourth. Consecutive singles opened the inning for the Illini before a Spartan error allowed the first runner to score. A single down the left field line helped the ensuing batter drive in Illinois' second run of the frame.

Michigan State got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth when Anthony scored on a Doloszycki fielder's choice. The Spartans scored a much-needed insurance run in the sixth, going ahead 6-3, when Doloszycki scored on a Lee ground out.

Things got dicey for MSU in the seventh when a dropped fly ball and throwing error placed the opposing lead-off batter on third. After an RBI single cut Michigan State's lead of 6-4, a third Spartan error and sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. Illinois traded places on an RBI single to center, once again putting two runners in scoring position with one out.

With the lead cut to just one, 6-5, Grey settled back in for the Spartans inducing a ground out and a pop out to end the game.

Softball Drops Series Finale to Illinois

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State softball looked to rally late but came up short on Sunday afternoon, falling 6-3 to Illinois in the series finale at Secchia Stadium.

MSU moves to 16-28 (3-14 B1G) while Illinois improves to 18-26 (5-11 B1G).

Senior Liv Grey (10-12) made the start for the Spartans before being relieved by junior Madison Taylor in the first inning. Taylor pitched well in relief allowing just one earned run in seven innings of work, striking out three. It was a bounce-back effort for Taylor who now owns a 3.35 ERA over her last 54.1 innings.

Michigan State's offense was led by sophomore Sydney Doloszycki's 2-for-4 effort. Doloszycki tripled for the second time in as many days and drove in one. Junior Mik Anthony went 2-for-3 with a double.

Sophomore Britain Beshears hit her second home run of the series and her 13th of the season on Sunday. Her solo shot to center moved her into a tie for third in program history for single season home runs alongside Brett Williams (13, 2011) and Stacey Phillips (13, 2000). Beshears also drew a walk to reach base twice in game three.

Senior Alexis Ross and sophomore Hannah Hawley singled for MSU. Hawley reached twice with a single and a hit by pitch.

Illinois scored all the runs it would need in the first putting a five spot on the Spartans. A trio of singles and a walk put the Illini ahead 3-0 before an error prolonged the inning and allowed a fourth runner to cross. Illinois tacked on one more via sac fly to lead 5-0.

Beshears got Michigan State on the board with her solo homer in the second. Doloszycki tripled with one down in the third, but back-to-back Spartan strikeouts ended the scoring threat.

A walk and two singled provided Illinois with an insurance run in the fourth. Senior Jenae Wash prevented an Illini run from scoring in the third with a diving grab in left.

Three straight Spartans singles cut the Fighting Illini lead to three to open the fifth frame. Ross led-off the inning with a bunt single before Hawley singled to right. After Ross and Hawley advanced one base on the throw, Doloszycki drove both in on a single to center. A misplay on the pick-up in center allowed Hawley to score from second on the play.

MSU barreled up several pitches over the final two innings, but none found the outfield grass.

TRANSFER PORTAL Michigan State football to host Indiana transfer edge rusher Anthony Jones for official visit

Indiana transfer edge rusher Anthony Jones tells me that he will take an official visit to Michigan State beginning Thursday, April 18 and ending on Saturday, April 20 (the day as the "Spring Showcase" event). He was originally planning to arrive on Monday, April 22 and finishing up on April 24, but the visit has been moved up.

Jones played in all 12 games for the Hoosiers in 2023, including four starts. He recorded 12 tackles and a half-tackle-for-loss. While at IU last year, Jones played under defensive coordinator Chad Wilt. Wilt coached inside linebackers primarily, in addition to coordinating the entire defense, but Jones did get some pass-rushing work in with him. Of course, Wilt is now the co-special teams coordinator and rush ends coach at Michigan State. Jones is being recruited as a rush end/edge.

In addition to Michigan State and UCLA, Jones has visits planned to Georgia Tech, Central Florida and Kansas. He has also already visited California.

Jones is a Las Vegas native. He began his career at Oregon in 2022. He appeared in two games for the Ducks as a true freshman and took a redshirt. Jones will have three years of eligibility remaining.

OTHER SCHOOLS: UM power forward Tarris Reed has announced his commitment...

Michigan power forward Tarris Reed has announced his commitment to the back-to-back national champions — UConn.

There was some thought that Reed would have been good portal pickup for the Spartans, but it was not meant to be..

“I chose UConn for its winning culture, commitment to player development and coaching style,” Reed said to On3. “Coach Hurley’s tough coaching style is known for pushing players into uncomfortable situations, making the uncomfortable seem comfortable. UConn provides the ideal setting and coaching for me to maximize my potential both on and off the court.”

Reed, a 6-foot-10 sophomore, averaged 9.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game this season for the Wolverines.

FOOTBALL Jonathan Smith recaps MSU's Spring Showcase: Chiles 'looked comfortable'

Michigan State wrapped up spring ball for the first time in the Jonathan Smith era and there were positive signs.

One of those positive signs was quarterback Aidan Chiles who flashed his athletic ability throughout the game.

“(Quarterback) Aidan (Chiles) threw it accurately, moved his feet well,” Smith said after the Spring Showcase. “I think it helped getting a little bit of a run game going. Aidan had a nice carry. Again, I think on both sides of it we wanted to base package but not show too much. This is all over tv and whatnot. He looked comfortable and guys made some plays for him in the passing game which was great to see.”

MEN'S BASKETBALL Izzo Makes an Announcement on AJ Hoggard...

There has been much speculation on Hoggard's future. Tom Izzo was on the Tim Staudt show and said AJ Hoggard would be trying for a Pro Career while maintaining college eligibility. However, if he does play college ball, it will NOT be at MSU.

Izzo did not say this, but I have also learned that many high-major college teams are interested in Hoggard. Sometimes, a new environment and better coaching make a huge difference, like Tarris Reed leaving UM and going to Connecticut, which should improve his game, or Cam Spencer moving from Rutgers to Connecticut to win a National Championship and transforming into a much better player.

Izzo also said he has not begun his search for an Assistant Coach, but he has some names in mind.

RECRUITING 2025 TE Matt Henderson enjoys 'family environment' on Michigan State visit

Michigan State hosted its "Spring Showcase" event on Saturday to conclude its 2024 spring football practice schedule. The showcase included some offense versus defense scrimmaging and it was the first time that MSU fans got a chance to watch the Spartans under head coach Jonathan Smith.

In addition to the fans in the stands, several recruits came to East Lansing to take in the event. One of those prospects who was in attendance was rising class of 2025 tight end Matt Henderson, who Michigan State tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator Brian Wozniak certainly has his eyes on.

Henderson thoroughly enjoyed his first trip to Michigan State and was able to bond with Wozniak ("Coach Woz") and learn more about the football program. In fact, he set up an official visit with MSU and will arrive back in East Lansing during the weekend of June 21.

Michigan State offered Henderson earlier this month and his relationship with Wozniak and the Spartans has developed from there.

"When Michigan State offered, it was an unreal opportunity," Henderson told Spartans Illustrated. "It was my first Big Ten offer and I was extremely grateful. Since then, Coach Woz has kept in great touch with me, trying to get to know me better."

Following the visit, Henderson detailed his trip with Spartans Illustrated and provided updates on where he stands in his recruitment.

"I got to see all of the facilities and meet with Coach Woz," Henderson said about the visit. "I learned a lot about the offense and how they roll in that department. My favorite part of everything was the family environment I felt from the program."

TRANSFER PORTAL Michigan State football to host Georgia Tech defensive end Eddie Kelly on official visit

The Michigan State football program will host Georgia Tech defensive end Eddie Kelly on an official visit on April 24 and April 25, he tells Spartans Illustrated. Jason Killop reported first.

"I'm excited to view the city and facilities," he told us.

He also has visits set to Missouri and Cincinnati.

In 2023 with Georgia Tech, Kelly ranked second on the team in total tackles among defensive lineman with 38. He also recorded five tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and two passes defended.

Kelly started his career at South Florida where he appeared in 11 games as a true freshman and recorded 19 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.

He was a three-star prospect in the 2022 class out of West Orange High School in Florida.

Kelly will have two years of eligibility left and still has a redshirt remaining if needed.

Michigan State added fellow defensive lineman D'Quan Douse to the program Kelly's teammate at Georgia Tech last year in January. He also played with Jaren Mangham at USF.

FOOTBALL Demetrice Martin, Courtney Hawkins: former teammates, now working together

Michigan State cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin and wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins go way back.

The former teammates at Michigan State are now working together once again – but this time, as coaches.

Hawkins and Martin first got to really know each other when Martin came on a visit to Michigan State. Martin’s hosts for that visit were none other than Hawkins and Michigan State Director of Athletics Alan Haller.

Eventually, Martin committed to Michigan State and played under George Perles and Nick Saban. Under Saban, Martin’s position coach was Mark Dantonio.

Martin had not returned to East Lansing after his playing career ended until he got hired at his alma mater by Jonathan Smith.

“It was kind of surreal, coming back, seeing all the new facilities,” Martin said. “It was pretty big time. I mean it was something I always watched from afar, always watching the guys from afar. I knew that any given opportunity, that (if) it was a right fit, I would love to be able to come back and give back to the university that gave me so much.”

RECRUITING 2025 CB Graceson Littleton eager to learn about Michigan State after offer

On Wednesday, Michigan State sent out a scholarship offer to class of 2025 cornerback/athlete Graceson Littleton.

Littleton, who currently attends Wharton High School in Tampa, Florida, has seen his recruitment pick up as of late and his offers list is now well into the double-digits.

The Michigan State offer is certainly one that has Littleton's attention, and he is looking forward to building a relationship with the Spartans moving forward.

Littleton took some time to chat with Spartans Illustrated about his feelings on the Michigan State offer, his upcoming visit plans and his general recruitment.

It was a conversation over the phone with Michigan State cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin and secondary coach Blue Adams where Littleton learned about the offer from the Spartans.

"It felt great," Littleton said. "Coach Martin and Coach Adams seemed very excited to offer me and talk about how they wanted me to visit!"
