FOOTBALL Dr. G&W's Week Five Recap (Against All Odds): Rorschach

After scanning some of the articles and social media following MSU's loss to Ohio State, I am in the same boat with a lot of people. Despite the final result on the scoreboard, I saw a lot of encouraging things for the Spartans this weekend. I even have a little bonus data to bolster my point.

That said, the neighborhood looks like it got a little tougher this weekend. Future opponents Indiana, Illinois and Rutgers all continue to look better than expected. When it is all said and done, MSU's odds for a bowl game are back down to just 50-50.

Bouncing back is what MSU wants to see from Aidan Chiles. Jonathan Smith and Nate Carter are confident the young quarterback will do so.

MSU’s Max Sheldon Named Big Ten Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

Senior earns first career B1G weekly accolade.

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis senior Max Sheldon was named Big Ten Men's Tennis Player of the Week, for his outstanding performance in pre-qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships, announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.

Sheldon went 5-0 in singles action over the first four days of the ITA All-American Championships to qualify for the Main Draw. He is one of five players who started out in Pre-Qualifying and made it to the Main Draw at the ITA-All American Championships, and the only one from the Big Ten to do so.

Notable plays from this tournament include two tough three-set wins over seeded players, including rallying from a set down vs. conference rival and 13th-seeded Christopher Li of Ohio State (4-6, 6-2, 6-2), one of the three matches that he rallied from down a set for the win.

Sheldon defeated four other ranked players, including Connor Gannon of Memphis, who was seeded 17-32, along with No. 96 Alexander Hoogmartens of UCLA, No. 1,216 Gabriele Brancatelli of Georgia Tech and No. 1851 William Mroz of Illinois ranked 1851.

He also teamed up with freshman Matthew Forbes in doubles action and posting a doubles win over 60th-ranked doubles team of Gus Tettamble and Timothy Carlsson Seger on Tulsa's home court.

This is Sheldon's first Player of the Week award of his career and Michigan State's first since junior Ozan Baris on April 3 of last season.

Sheldon joins teammate Baris (April 3, 2024; April 19, 2023) and Ronald Hohmann III (Feb. 28, 2024) in receiving B1G Player of the Week accolades in the past two seasons.

A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Sheldon also earned first-team All-Big Ten accolades in 2023.

Sheldon will continue his journey in the final rounds of the ITA All-Americans this weekend, including winning earlier Wednesday afternoon to advance to round of 32.

Up next, the Spartans will travel to the Milwaukee Tennis Classic from Sept 27-29.

RECRUITING 2026 Ohio tight end Brayden Fogle enjoys experience on Michigan State visit

Michigan State hosted class of 2026 high-three-star tight end Brayden Fogle for a game-day visit. It was the first time that Fogle has been to East Lansing.

Fogle, who currently attends Lexington High School, ranks as the No. 17 prospect in Ohio and the No. 26 tight end in the 2026 cycle.

The Spartans lost to Ohio State by a final score of 38-7 on Saturday, but Fogle still enjoyed his trip to MSU.

Fogle spoke with Spartans Illustrated to discuss his visit experience, provide his thoughts on Michigan State and update his general recruitment.

"Honestly, I just liked the people up there," Fogle said about the Michigan State visit. "They had great hospitality. I liked the environment. It was a nice stadium. They took good care of us."

FOOTBALL Jonathan Smith, MSU gave Ohio State a good fight, despite what the score says

Even though No. 3 Ohio State got a 31-point win, it really did not feel like it, based upon how Jonathan Smith acted and sounded after the game. He pointed too a lot of missed opportunities by his team, rather than bow down to the superior talent of OSU.

FOOTBALL Running back Nate Carter still sees 'great potential' in Michigan State

A lot of interesting perspectives from Michigan State redshirt junior running back Nate Carter following the Spartans' 38-7 loss to Ohio State on Saturday night.

He isn't deterred.

"I think the mindset of this group is different," Carter said. "I think that this hurts. Obviously, no one wants to get blown out at their home stadium. It hurts, and I think that there's only going to be an increase from there. I don't see this team as being a team that just folds. I see a team that's hungry. I see a team of guys that's going to continue to work and that's going to continue to push and that's going to come in every single day and do what's necessary so that the results are better, so we can get those wins, and so we can focus on the little details so things like this don't happen.

"So, I see a lot of great potential in this team, and now, at the end of the day, we just have to come back on Monday and get right back to work. We have to put this game behind us, we have to get right back to work, because we've got to play again on Friday night against another good team (in Oregon). And we have a lot more games going forward. We play some really, really good teams. We can compete with these teams, and we can also beat those teams. We have to do what we have to do, and focus on ourselves, so that we can be able to get those wins."

FOOTBALL The Spartans Played Hard but were Overwhelmed by Self-inflicted Mistakes, the Refs, and the Buckeyes.

The Spartans played hard but were overwhelmed by mistakes, refs, and Buckeyes.

The Ohio State Buckeyes put their 23-million roster to good use, but numerous Spartan mistakes and questionable calls by the refs helped.

Let's keep it simple; it came down to these plays:

  1. Spartans go for it on 4th and one and come up short—no interior push.
  2. Buckeyes on 3rd and goal pass into the endzone, and Malik Spencer drops a sure interception.
  3. Velling fumbles the football deep into Buckeye territory.
  4. Chiles fumbles in the red zone, and the refs miss a facemask on Ohio State.
  5. OSU's Henderson appears to have fumbled the ball deep in their territory, but the refs say his arm was down.
  6. MSU's Eckley shanks a punt, giving the Buckeyes good field position.
  7. OSU scored a late TD before the first half ended when OSU WR Smith made a circus catch against good coverage from CB Woods.
  8. The Spartans look sloppy to start 2nd half on offense.
  9. On 4th and 1, the refs give Ohio State a first down on a phantom spot of the ball.
  10. Ohio State's No.4 should have been called for a personal foul but was not.
  11. An Aidan Chiles interception gave OSU a short field to work with, and OSU scored again. BALL GAME

On a night Coach Dantonio was being honored, his creedence was to protect and control the ball on offense. We saw none of that tonight.

The good news is that MSU went toe-to-toe with the Buckeyes physically, and the defense played hard all night, so they deserved better. The other good news is that Ohio State has a monster offense, and the Spartans won't see another one like it the rest of the year.

FOOTBALL Michigan State falls 38-7 to No. 3 Ohio State, game recap

Not much to be said about that second half, but there was a lot of promise killed off by turnovers and blown no-calls by officials in the first half. Full game recap is up on the homepage now:

OTHER SCHOOLS: Thorne porn and application to Chiles

In the should have, could have, what could have been.

Thorne has been abysmal against good competition. While he completed a couple of big gainers, and the interception he threw was a catchable ball, although it was slightly behind the receiver and high, the dude should have caught it, he completed a very low percentage of his passes and took sacks by holding the ball too long. Until Arkansas dropped into prevent, his completion percentage was below 50%. Same as it was against Cal.

For anyone lamenting about PT, he has not gotten any better.

How does this relate to Chiles? We assume he will stop sailing balls and throwing so many interceptions. That is not a given. Just see PT who Auburns fans are ready to burn at the stake along with Hugh “I routinely throw my players under the bus” Freeze.

Just hoping the light goes on for Chiles, and he becomes more accurate with better decision making.

OFF TOPIC: Detroit Pistons Owner Tom Gores buys 27 percent stake in the Los Angeles Chargers

The two insiders spoke with AP on condition of anonymity as the purchase has not yet been announced by the team. It is expected to be approved by NFL owners at their league meetings in Atlanta next month.
