My story on Bubba Smith's father and influence beyond MSU

Michigan State fans know Willie Ray Smith Sr. as Bubba Smith's father. He played a much larger
role in MIchigan State's 1965 and 1966 success and college football integration above and
below the Mason Dixon Line.

Willie Ray Smith story, like Duffy Daugherty's, is lost to a history that settled on the fairytale of Bear Bryant leading the way.

OTHER MSU SPORTS Wrestling’s Late Surge Falls Short at CSU Baskersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Michigan State wrestling won three straight bouts at 141, 149 and 157 to mount a late comeback but CSU Bakersfield took the dual by a final score of, 21-14, on Sunday afternoon at the Icardo Center.

MSU moves to 2-1 in duals the season and will return to dual action after the new year to take on No. 1-ranked Penn State on January 10, 2025. The Spartans are set to close 2024 at the Midlands Championships on December 29-30.

Sunday's dual got started at 174 pounds and Michigan State got off to a fast start behind a tech fall by redshirt sophomore Ceasar Garza (19-4). Garza tallied four takedowns in the first period to mount a 12-4 advantage before an escape and two second period takedowns secured the tech fall.

CSUB fought back with five straight wins however to take an 18-5 lead over MSU, with three major decision victories extending the lead. The Spartans dropped a pair of matches by decision at 125 and 133 pounds that were within reach.

Redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand led 5-3 heading to the third period. Weiand looked to put his opponent to his back right off the whistle but couldn't hang on for potential back points. The final 15 seconds of the 133-pound bout saw redshirt senior Tristan Lujan tied with his opponent 1-1, but a late takedown gave the Roadrunners a decision.

Trailing 18-5 in the dual, Michigan State opted to wrestle redshirt freshman Evan Herriman in his first career dual. Herriman came away on top 3-0 to earn his debut victory. Herriman road out the entire second period to secure riding time and later opened the third period with a reversal.

Redshirt freshman Jaden Crumpler bumped up to 149 pounds to win a 5-1 decision for MSU that cut the deficit to 18-11. Crumpler quickly escaped to open the second and secured a takedown early in the third period before riding out the rest of the bout.

At 157 pounds, redshirt sophomore Braden Stauffenberg extended the Spartan winning streak with a 6-5 decision. After a scoreless first, Stauffenberg scored the first takedown of the match off his opponent's shot. Cal State Bakersfield earned a takedown with 15 seconds left in the bout, but Stauffenberg was quick to get off bottom to re-take a lead at 6-5.

Fifth-year senior Jay Nivison made his Spartan dual debut at 165 pounds to close things out, taking a 1-1 match into tiebreakers where he was defeated, 2-1.

OTHER SCHOOLS: Brawl in Columbus-what a farce

In the tunnel brawl several MSU players were suspended and charges were filed by the DA. Here we have a brawl on TV with pepper spray and punches exchanged and what happens? A $100K slap on the wrist and NO suspensions. The Big Ten has two standards of justice one for UM and OSU and a different one for MSU and the rest.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Michigan State dominates Nebraska in conference home opener, 89-52

The Michigan State men's basketball team played its second consecutive Big Ten game, and conference home opener, on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans blew out Nebraska by a final score of 89-52.

With the win, Michigan State improved to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play on the young 2024-2025 season. Following the loss, the Cornhuskers drop to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

This is the first time MSU has started 2-0 in Big Ten competition since the 2021-22 season.

FOOTBALL Dr. G&W's Championship Weekend Preview (and Playoff Scenarios)

The season is finished for MSU, but there are still games to play, championships to win, and potentials wagers to place.

This one is some fun bonus coverage where I do a pretty deep dive of the various playoff scenarios. There are 32 possible outcomes (which some solid assumptions in place) but you can really break those down further in just four cases (depending on the winners of the Big Ten and SEC). In all four cases, it is simple to create good brackets, as long as the committee isn't STUPID. The problem is that the rules specially call for stupidity. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
