Sorry about UM thread but thinking about inaugural season of Coach D and Harbaugh. I find it hard to believe they could do better than 7-6 which is what we finished in 2007. They have nowhere near the talent that we fielded on offense at the skill positions. I don't see a Brian Hoyer anywhere on their roster. We had Ringer and Caulcrick carrying the rock and Devin Thomas and KFD as reliable targets for Hoyer. O-Line might be comparable. I can't recall the hodgepodge that we cobbled together on the line but I believe the comparison is apt.
With that firepower, we averaged about 34 pts and the defense gave up about 26 to get us to7 wins. Granted we had some tough losses, including UM. I think a couple losses were in OT. I cannot see them putting that much talent on the field to average 34 a game to overcome their middle of the road defense. I can't recall what we had on defense but I want to say those units are pretty comparable as well.
Here are some of the players I believe we had on D: Pretty sure we had Wiley, Weaver and Chris L Rucker in secondary and maybe Jeremy Ware. At linebacker, Kaleb, Jones and Gordon? D line is where I draw a blank. Kershaw, St. Dic, Baldwin...?
Not to mention our special teams were solid that year. I don't think their kicking game would compare to ours either.
Now maybe if everything went right we could have had a couple more wins. But similar to what Harbaugh has to do, Coach D had to instill a winning mindset. We probably finished where we should have given the talent and lack of depth.
Put it all together and I just don't see UM having as much success as we had.
