I wrote a little Memorial Day tribute today & posted on my facebook page, but thought some on here might also enjoy.

------------------

Today I pause and remember.

Today I remember because nothing great has been accomplished without courageous acts of sacrifice. Thanks to our active military, veterans, and families -- I’m humbled to have the gift of freedom bestowed upon me. I salute the over one million Americans that have lost their lives in battle to make this nation a beacon for freedom and hope in the world.

Today I remember because the word remains a dangerous place. And while this danger continues to rear its ugly head while often hiding its unjust face from civilization – I’m blessed to live in a nation that stands for the most noble of virtues and is willing to make sacrifices to ensure the safety, freedom, and liberty of America.

Today I remember because too many Americans take the liberty and freedom of our great nation for granted. Too many dismiss the notion that a powerful American military bequeaths a more peaceful world and a safer nation. I pause because this danger scares me more than the guns of our enemies, as rot from within is tougher to overcome than even the most sophisticated of enemy. Today I honor our forefathers, give thanks to the many sacrifices made today in the interest of freedom around the world, and pray for my fellow citizens who lack the appreciation for our great nation and military.

Today I remember because my father is a fallen Navy hero. I have been shaped by a Navy Captain and will forever be indebted to the US Navy for molding my father and hero. My father served two tours in Vietnam and was part of a Special Forces operation during the Gulf War. Perhaps more importantly, he was a patriot, a man of integrity, and an ambassador to all things military.

Today I remember my friends who have served and continue to serve our great nation. More than they will ever know, I look up to every one them – and give thanks for their selfless service to our nation. These men are worthy of the purple hearts, medals, and recognition they have received – and far more deserving of praise than anything I will ever accomplish.

Today I remember because my cousin puts the United States of America above himself. I give pause to acknowledge this young man following in the footsteps of his uncle and my father as part of the US Navy. And as he continues through his BUD/S training on the path toward becoming a Navy SEAL, I give thanks knowing there are strong American men and women willing to make such a noble sacrifice.

Today I remember because I’m surrounded by peace in a troubled and dangerous world. I remember because history teaches us that freedom and liberty require incorrigible bloodshed to uphold and maintain, but many individuals and nations languish or disappear when it’s time to uphold these ideals. I’m thankful to live in a world of freedom and justice; today I remember the innumerable and incorrigible sacrifices made by millions of brave Americans over the last 250 years.

Today I pause and remember because freedom will never be free.
