The NFL's championship weekend was no letdown in excitement, and it became another big ratings hit for the NFL.
The Bengals-Chiefs matchup in the AFC Championship Game averaged 47.6 million viewers, according to CBS, making it the most-watched title game in the early time slot in six years. The game peaked with 60.99 million viewers.
The Rams-49ers matchup in the NFC Championship Game hit 50.4 million viewers across Fox, Fox Deportes, Fox Sports streaming platforms, NFL Digital and Yahoo! Sports properties. That marked the network’s best NFC Championship Game since 2014. The ratings peaked at 55.2 million viewers toward the end of the game.
Now, what's expected for the Super Bowl ?
Last year’s Super Bowl viewership (a final average of 96.4 million across all platforms) was certainly pandemic influenced and initial expectation by media analysts is that given the momentum from this postseason the Super Bowl number's are expected to go up over last year.
Neither the Bengals nor Rams are historically big-drawing television teams and one of the markets (Cincinnati) ranks No. 36 among Nielsen’s Designated Market Ratings. But you also have the nation’s No. 2 market, and even if L.A. is always considered a weird TV town, the sheer size has significant meaning.
Initial estimates are that the 2022 Super Bowl lands just short of 100 million viewers with a blowout and over 100 million viewers with a one-score game in the fourth quarter.
