Before Bob Grant was a pioneer at Wake Forest, he planned to play for Michigan State coach Duffy Daugherty. He would have been a sophomore on the 1965 team and junior in 1966.

Wake Forest honors Grant with its Trailblazer Award in an example of setting the record straight. The story of Wake Forest, Michigan State and other schools leading the way have been lost in the myths and fiction surrounding the 1970 USC-Alabama game.
