Reading some of the recent threads has got me thinking about linking recruits decommiting, NIL deals becoming more important and how that translates to the real world. Maybe not a good thing to get me thinking, but.....................

My take on where recruiting is going is that even if you get a player who says yes to your team, you must continue to recruit him until his signature is on the offer. Things can happen to make the kid change his mind. Better suited program for him. Better NIL deal. Who knows.

And I think that this occurs in the real world as well. In my business, I have to hire temporary, seasonal help during our busy season (tax season!). And, from time to time, a new staff member. It's been maybe over the last 3 years or so that I've noticed that offering someone a job and having them accept, does not mean that they'll actually show up on their first day! I've had people accept the job and then ghost when it comes to sending in their paperwork. I've had a couple of people do everything and then not show up on the first day. Or even work a day or two and never return.

Is the world changing to where your word doesn't mean as much as it used to? What I've found is that when I find someone good for the role I'm hiring for is that I have to stay in communication with them. Remind them of their strengths and why I want them to join the team. Can't hire and ignore them until their start date. They'll keep looking, much like it appears that recruits are doing these days.

If you hire people, what are you seeing? Is it not over until they show up for day one? Have you had to change your hiring and onboarding process the last few years? I'm thinking that sports recruiting is being reflected in the business world outside of sports. Find the person you want. Let them know why you want them. And keep following up until they're on the team.

Right now, I may need to bring on an intern for some projects or a part timer, so this is something I've been struggling with.

Am I off base here? Thoughts?
