Can someone 'splain me the strategy on the "clumping" of commitments?

I asked in the middle of another thread yesterday but..

What exactly is the idea here with these groups of recruits announcing closely together? Is it really being orchestrated? It generates a surge of excitement, but other than that, I'm not all that clear on the strategy. What exactly is there to gain? Is it just a matter of guys holding off and announcing to garner more recognition for their class, or does it help squeeze out other programs, or what?

I "think" I know, but I'm not sure I know. You know?
