Was reading Mike Farrell's take on Shilique Calhoun and I had to literally stop and laugh. Here's the quote:
Farrell's take: Another Michigan State underrated commit who turns out to be a stud at the next level? When will we ever learn? Le'Veon Bell, Trae Waynes, Darqueze Dennard, Cook and Calhoun are good examples. Granted, none of these guys showed the potential they reached, so the Spartans coaching staff is clearly doing a great job.
None of them showed the potential they reached?? I would argue the complete opposite. Arguably the best coaching staff in the country thought enough of them to not only recruit but offer them. He listed 5 guys but add Conklin and Jack Allen in just for the sake of argument regarding 2015. None of these guys showed the potential they've reached? BS.
If you haven't the sight to see what is being looked for, then it's clear they didn't show what you needed to see. Without even meaning to Mike Farrell outed himself, and his limited abilities, when it comes to recruiting. I'm not a star gazer so please don't lump me into that group. This is strictly regarding the tired narrative I'm sick of reading about: MSU gets under the undervalued guys (i.e. underskilled) guys and coaches them into stars. At first blush it's a glowing review of our staff. The reality is that anyone remotely connected to the coaching fraternity knows MD et al can coach with anyone in America. I now read it, at least to a small extent, as a dig on MSU and their inability to bring in "high level" talent per Rivals.
When will they learn, as Farrell asks?
Based on his own response, likely never.
