I have to say, it was pleasantly shocking to here this:
"to be honest, we're game ready after we get through this week"
Did that get anyone else's juices flowing? I like the way this team has built depth and reps over the course of many seasons now. That means the Oline and the Dline, especially, can hit the ground running year after year. Even in the Spring there were comments about this team being "game ready". It's still amazing to hear Coach D come right out and say it, though. And it was hilarious to see the BTN guys react to that. It's a pretty cocky statement, but from Coach D..it's just a statement and I believe it.
If you really think about it, this program has such continuity with both coaches AND players, we have advantages that even NFL teams don't have. That used to be the biggest advantage that NFL teams had over the college game-so many returning players year after year. That's not really the case any more.
Back to MSU though..this staff has always paid attention to the guys at the back of the depth chart too, along with teaching the assistant coaches so that they are ready when it's their moment to shine. Being able to spend a ton of time on just the two areas that are obviously "new player" areas (CB and RB specifically) enables this staff to just keep tweaking the lines and the QB and the LBs, but really they are improving things over last year instead of playing catch up and trying to figure out where to plug guys and how to fill holes. There probably isn't a better position than RB to just let the players figure out who's going to shine. We all know that it's going to take care of itself. WR is probably a close 2nd in that regard. Then there are the CBs and maybe Safety. And that is an area where I think MSU is both focusing on from a player-personnel perspective and from a scheme perspective.
It's an enviable position.
