My friend coaches OL at a 1AA
This is the clean version as the real version is pretty inappropriate.
He was talking about evaluating OL
He said "Evaluating OL is like (male body part), some are showers and some are growers. In the end they are all gonna be around the same size. The hard part is that most don't know how to use what they got no matter how much practice they get."
I laughed and he said. "I am serious 90% of D1 OL are probably within 1 inch and 10 pounds of the mean"
He has a good point though about guys who are college ready at age 17 and guys who continue to develop.
Look at guys like Kyle Kalis and Jack Conklin. Junior year in high school Conklin is listed as being 6'3 240 and Kalis is 6'4 285. A year later, Kalis is an All-American and listed at 6'5 305 and Conklin is 6'5 275. Today Kalis is listed at 6'5 295 and Conklin is listed at 6'6 317. In this case Kalis was the "shower" and Conklin the "grower".
I remember when I first started doing this recruiting stuff I saw Roland Martin the summer before his junior year. I thought he was the best OL prospect I ever saw. He was massive at 6'5 320 and simply manhandled kids. I hyped him up a lot when he signed with MSU. 6 years later he is 6'5 330 at MSU and is a good college OL, but not great. Contrast that with Kyle Cook who was 6'3 270 when I first saw him and ended up at 6'3 310 and starting over 60 games in NFL. I liked Cook too and told many on here as much,, but I did not see him being a stalwart NFL starter.
Sometimes the shower is legit like DJ Fluker, who was even more massive than Roland Martin and became a 1st Rd pick. However, Joe Staley was listed in Rivals database as being 6'5 225 and how about Eric Fischer. Joe Thomas was listed at 6'7 270 when he signed with Badgers.
Showers and Growers for OL....I like it
