EAST LANSING - The Michigan State hockey team opened its 2015-16 season on Sunday with a 2-1 exhibition win over Western Ontario at Munn Ice Arena. Freshman Cody Milan and senior Travis Walsh scored for the Spartans, who outshot the Mustangs, 41-18.
"It was nice to have an opportunity to play," said MSU head coach Tom Anastos. "I thought the game got a little better in quality as it went on and we wanted to use this as an evaluation.
"I think in the end, you want to play these games as a step in the next part of the process in preparing for your season and I thought tonight helped us achieve that."
The Spartans made it 1-0 just two minutes into the game when Milan andJustin Hoomaian teamed up on a 2-on-1.
Hoomaian picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and carried it in down the right side into the Mustang zone. After maneuvering around a defenseman, he delivered a perfect pass to Milan, who buried the puck upstairs from just off the left side of the crease.
Western Ontario evened the game at 1-1 when Noah Schwartz scored on the power play 8:37 into the opening period.
The Spartans struck early in the second when Walsh scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 44 second mark.
Michael Ferrantino ripped a snap shot from the dot of the right circle and the rebound bounced off Mustang goaltender Peter Delmas and fell to Walsh, who was charging toward the net tapped it in.
The Spartans peppered Delmas throughout the game, including the second period when they had 17 shots on goal.
The Spartans had several good looks on the power play, producing a total of 16 shots on the man-advantage.
"We went 0-for-7 on the power play and haven't worked a millisecond on it thus far," said Anastos. "As the game went on, we just kind of let the guys move around and make plays and we got some pretty good scoring chances."
Milan was one of four freshmen that dressed for Sunday's game, joiningZach Osburn, Brennan Sanford and Mason Appleton.
"I thought the freshman all preformed in a positive manner," said Anastos.
Jake Hildebrand played the first 40 minutes and stopped 14 of 15 shots before giving way to Ed Minney in the third period.
"I thought Ed looked really good in the time that he played," said Anastos. "I thought he looked big in the net, had good body control and looked really good on the breakaway."
The Spartans begin the regular season next weekend when they travel to Portland, Maine, for the IceBreaker Tournament. MSU will take on host Maine on Friday (8 p.m.) and then Lake Superior State on Saturday (4:30 p.m.).
