My latest story exposing Bear Bryant as a segregationist is on the 60th anniversary of the 1962 Rose Bowl. Bryant tried a backdoor maneuver to gain an invitation at the expense of the traditional BIg Ten team. He also most succeeded. He might if not for two reasons: 1) UCLA's Black students and Black players proteated; 2) Jim Murray was the only media member to pick up on their response in an era when the media otherwise avoided writing about race in sports stories.

As a consequence, the true 1960s pioneers have been overshadowed by Bear Bryant mythology.
