So how about the timing of this commitment? It couldn't be better. Alabama and Ohio State are off and running gaining multiple commitments for 2017. The race is on. It appears that you can't just fill up one class per year ... you have to do that and also recruit for following years. The recruiting game is getting more and more competitive. And you just can't rest for a minute. The Rison commitment serves notice to all 2017 prospects that the Spartans are for real.
IMO the hiring of Blackwell, Burton, and Samuels have had a very positive effect on recruiting and it appears that it couldn't have come at a better time. I would guess that the amount of time that the staff spends on recruiting is way more than a few years ago and is only going to increase with the proliferation of on site and off site camps and "events".
Kudos to Coach D for tweaking his staff and our approach to recruiting. To get 17 commits at this time of year is quite an accomplishment and I'm sure it involved some adjustments to their approach and processes.
