So I'm running an errand during lunch, and I have the local Sports Talk radio station on (610 AM). they immediately say, "Our next guest is former Texans backup QB Tony Banks".
The host starts and says, "We are here to talk Texans football, but full disclosure Tony, I grew up a Wolverine fan and it still pisses me off that Izzo always seems to over-achieve in March Madness".
Tony replies - "If you don't like Tom Izzo, you don't like college basketball. I still bleed green, but even if I didn't, I would appreciate Tom. For everything going on in college basketball, tom is one of the coaches that runs a clean program, and he takes these kids for 4 or 5 years and develops them as basketball players and individuals. If I was fortunate enough to have a son that was top basketball recruit, Izzo's program would be #1 on my list. Period.
(Great answer, I think to myself)
Host - "Even I have to admit I admire his program"
Tony "And now Dantonio has the same thing going on in football, and he has two strait Top 5 finishes nationally"
Host - "yes, well Baylor is still hurting from the Cotton Bowl. Anyway, what do you think about the QB situation for the Texans?"
Tony goes on to say he doesn't think either QB we picked up (Hoyer or Mallett) is likely a top NFL QB, but we got them for a reasonable price and O'Brien has worked with both of them. He says that is a good way to go, unless you have access to a QB you are very, very high on.
Finally, and this is the main reason I'm posting this on the football board, Tony puts in a plug for his QB mentoring program in the Houston area. He works with some of the top Middle school and high school QB's. He says it is tough, because all of the colleges in Texas and the south are going to the shotgun snap, and they want duel threat QB's. He said he is teaching QB's to take snaps, drop back, read defenses and prepare them for pro-style offenses.
I am thinking we might start to have some connections in Houston. Hoyer is here, Keshawn is here (although he will have work hard to hold his spot), and now Tony is mentoring young QB's. Max Bullough was on the practice squad here, too. Perhaps our coaches should be reaching out to these guys, especially Tony, when they are down here.
Finally, and I knwo this is getting real long, Tony said, "That's what I'm teaching my 8 year old son. He will know how to take a snap, and drop back." The host said, I have seen your 8 old son, he looks like he is 14 years old". Tony says, "I know, and throws better than most 14 years old already".
Hey, we might have a legacy recruit for the 2025 class!!
