As much as I don't care for the guy, he has masterfully worked the media better than any coach I can recall. He knows how to stay in the center of the news and keep his buzz alive,
One example was how he invites players like James Winston to Michigan for some NFL mentoring. Of course, he picks a date where Michigan is playing in a huge basketball game, and he sits center court, knowing full well, the media will be his mouthpiece. You have Peru, the shirt off, his invitation to Saban and others to come to his camp.
The satellite camps are probably the best example. Others criticized them but they were a brilliant marketing move. Recently, he used one to raise over $100,000 for cancer brain research. He is a publicity whore, and I find it off putting, but he is somewhat of a creative genius at manipulating the media, as well as his image, like a master puppeteer.
He is very creative and innovative in a positive way. He isn't afraid to do things no one has done before. There is an element of audacity to his approach. He can alienate other coaches with his brazen behavior.
He can be socially awkward, but he appears to have that program heading in the right direction. There is definitely momentum in Ann Arbor. So far, he has been more inspiring than he has been divisive. I think some on here are underestimating him. I expect them to win 9 games this year and I expect them to give us a competitive game. My question is whether he flames out after 5 years or is he a long termer?
He got off to a slow start recruiting but I expect him to finish strong, possibly even challenging MSU and Penn State for the second highest rated recruiting class in the Big Ten.
There have been signs of how he can fracture relations and leave a trail of controversy behind him. He likes control, full control. I am curious how he will handle losing.
What are your thoughts six months into his tenure?
