It was not necessarily Adams over Evans…
Though it may seem like that, Michigan State is looking at Adams as a RB and Evans was more of WR. The deal with Evans was he wanted to commit to Michigan State (yes he apparenty called to do so), but the Spartans told him he needed to come up to campus with family. If you remember a few dates were set, but it never happened for some reason or another.
Keep in mind that while Evans was taking his time, Michigan State realized that they were in a position to potentially sign Chambers, Layne and Corley. Nothing against Evans, but I think MSU just felt that they had other needs that were more pressing.
In the meantime, UM made a move for Evans and he did take time to get up to Ann Arbor and the rest is history.
Now where this becomes interesting is Trishton Jackson. Because if Michigan State would have gotten commitment from Evans, I am pretty sure that they would not have a spot for Jackson.
Jackson came to camp and Dantonio realized they did have some room for another player and he would much rather coach Jackson than have to coach against him. I call this the Josiah Price situation when a player essentially forces the staffs hand.
BTW, I feel confident in saying that if UM did not have Evans they would have gone harder after Jackson.
So if you are looking to compare players down the road, I would compare Jackson and Evans as I think it could have been the other way around. BTW, Jackson and Evans are both rated 5.7 3-star recruits by Rivals.com.
MSU/UM have not had too many situations where you can compare players with that said...
MSU took McGarrett Kings and that mean no room for Dennis Norfleet
UM took Ken Wilkins which allowed MSU to get some kid named Marcus Rush
MSU offered Royce Jenkins -Stone, but I was told they had Riley Bullough higher on teh board than him despite what recruiting "analysts" said.
MSU wanted Jarod Wilson and if they had him they probably do not grab Mark Meyers late.
MSU was able to grab Jack Conklin which they may not have down if they had Ben Braden
MSU wanted Ondre Pipkins and took David Fennel late
A few classic ones I know were direct impacts
Take Jeremy Langford after missing on James White
Take Anthony Rashad White after missing on Bruce Gaston
