I don't get to see Detroit play very much, living down here. If they are on national tv like last night, I'll tune in. But outside of the Redzone, I really don't see them play much.
Ok, but when I DO see the Loins play, the cameras seem to focus in on Jim Caldwell a lot between plays. Caldwell reminds of of Jack Pardee, the old Houston Oilers head coach. Pardee would stand on the sidelines during games and seemed to nothing more than a spectator. Hell, for years he didn't wear a headset until the owner thought it was a back look, so Pardee starting wearing a headset that wasn't wired to anything. You can't make this stuff up. It was hilarious.
Ok, back to Caldwell. Outside of Jack Pardee, I've never seen an NFL head coach less engaged in the game. If it's a good play, he has a confused look on his face. If it's a bad play. He has a confused look on his face. If it's a horrific call that goes against Detroit....yep, just the same confused look on his face. I've yet to see him say a word into his headset, to a player, to his coaches or to an official. Very strange.
Look, every head coach doesn't have to be like Pete Carroll, running around, slapping the players assess on the good plays, giving them an ear full on the bad plays and constantly working the refs, but MAN, Caldwell sure seems like he needs to be more involve on game day. He needs to show some leadership.
Is this a talking point with Lions fans, or am I'm I just catching Caldwell on bad days?
