36th-Ranked Michigan State Men’s Tennis Defeats No. 68 Wisconsin Friday​

Spartans post first road win of the season to earn back-to-back victories.​


MADISON, Wis. – Michigan State men's tennis battled to a thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 68 Wisconsin, rallying back after dropping the doubles point.

The win marks the Spartans' first road victory of the season.

MSU continues the road trip this weekend with more Big Ten Conference action, as the Spartans take on Nebraska on Sunday.

MSU won its fourth-straight match making their record 8-5 on the season. Wisconsin turns 0-3 in conference play, losing their first match back at home after four matches on the road.

Hoping to continue their success in doubles, MSU used the same doubles lineup as the last three matches. Junior Ozan Baris and redshirt sophomore Aristotelis Thanos in the No. 1 spot, with the brother duo of senior Max Sheldon and freshman Mitchell Sheldon in the second spot for the Spartans. Sophomore Taym Alazmeh and freshman Vuk Radjenovic rounded out the final doubles pairings for the Spartans.

Oliver Olsson and Thomas Zlatohlavek secured a 7-5 win for Wisconsin over MSU's No. 53-ranked duo of Ozan Baris and Aristotelis Thanos.

Edouard Aubert and Matthew Fullerton clinched the doubles point for Wisconsin with a 6-4 win over MSU's Taym Alazmeh and Vuk Radjenovic.

With the doubles point in favor of the home-standing Badgers, the remaining match went unfinished.

The doubles point went to the Badgers, making the Spartans fight hard to pull off a win in Madison.

The Spartans' first win of the day came from the No. 3 spot Max Sheldon in singles. He defeated Thomas Zlatohlavek (WIS) in a quick match, winning 6-4, 6-4.

Next door was Thanos who put up another point for the Spartans. He took down Patrik Meszaros (WIS) in an impressive 6-1, 6-3 win.

Freshman Danial Rakhmatullayev battled Edouard Albert (WIS), but couldn't get on the scoreboard. Albert defeated Rakhmatullayev 6-3, 6-2.

Next in line comes Baris, with another win for the Spartans. Defeating Michael Minasyan (WIS) 6-3, 6-4, Baris helped the Spartans pull ahead on the scoreboard.

Grabbing another point for the Spartans, and clinching the victory, was freshman Mitchell Sheldon. After a long battle with Collin Beduhn, Sheldon came out on top with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win. This back-and-forth match was hard fought, and Sheldon strengthened the Spartan lead.

The final match featured a showdown between Matthew Forbes and Matthew Fullerton. Both players gave it their all in a hard-fought contest, but Forbes was not able to come out on top. Fullerton won the match 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.

The Spartans continue their road trip with B1G play as they take on No. 49 ranked Nebraska on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.

No. 36 Michigan State Secures Another Road Victory With 4-0 Sweep over No. 49 Nebraska​

Spartans head home with two more road wins under their belt.​

LINCOLN, Neb. – No. 36 Michigan State men's tennis posted a 4-0 sweep over No. 49 Nebraska on Sunday afternoon at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.

With this most recent victory, the Green and White improved to 9-5 on the season, overcoming their 4-5 start by winning the last five in a row, and added another win to their road matches, winning their last two after dropping the first five road matches of the ledger.

No. 49 Nebraska fell to 9-5 on the season, breaking a two-match winning streak.

MSU shook up its doubles pairings, deviating from previous weekends. Redshirt sophomore Aristotelis Thanos and freshman Danial Rakhmatullayev teamed up at the No. 1 doubles spot. The brother duo of senior Max Sheldon and freshman Mitchell Sheldon slotted in at No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Taym Alazmeh and freshman Vuk Radjenovic rounded out the lineup at No. 3.

The Sheldon brother duo were the first Spartans pairing to grab a win for the day. The pairing took on Bilicic/Shepp (NEB) and pulled away victorious at 6-3.

MSU's new pairing of Thanos/Rakhmatullayev challenged Mueller/Sysoev (NEB) but ultimately fell, 5-7.

The tie-breaking match was between Alazmeh/Radjenovic (MSU) and Linquet/Wells. A back-and-forth match favored the Spartans, winning 7-5.

After winning the doubles point, Spartans went into their singles matches feeling confident but knew that they would have to dig deep and pull out the win against Nebraska.

Grabbing another point for the Spartans was freshman Vuk Radjenovic. Radjenovic took on Linquet (NEB). Linquet tried to fight back but Radjenovic got the win, 6-1, 6-4.

Ma. Sheldon picked up his second win of the day against Nikolay Sysoev (NEB). Ma. Sheldon pulled ahead at the last second in his first match to defeat 7-5, 6-4.

Clinching the win and completing the sweep for the Spartans was Ozan Baris. The Spartan junior faced Calvin Mueller (NEB), and the pairing had a tough battle but Baris ended the match by clinching victory in the singles match and the Spartans, 6-4, 7-5.

With the match in favor of the Spartans, the remaining matches went unfinished.

MSU will be back on the road next weekend to take on Indiana on Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT and Purdue on Sunday, March 23 at t 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
