Cam Vieaux Forgoes Signing Professional Contract, Will Return to MSU
EAST LANSING - Michigan State pitcher Cam Vieaux, who was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 19th round (580 overall) of last month’s Major League Baseball Draft, has elected not to sign a contract with the club and will return to Michigan State for his junior season.
“I love Michigan State, and I’m really excited to be back,” Vieaux said. “I’m fired up to come back and try and win a championship. My parents are very supportive of me coming back to school. We’re a Michigan State family, and we’re all excited about me coming back to East Lansing. I can’t wait to be back on campus.”
“We are thrilled that Cam has decided to continue his education and his student-athlete experience here at Michigan State for the 2015-2016 year,” MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. “Any time you get your Friday night starter back, it obviously makes the team better. I’m excited for our team and for Cam as he will continue to grow as a leader, a player, and a person and put himself and our team in a position to have an outstanding 2016 season.”
Vieaux, who was redshirted his first year and will enter his fourth year at MSU in the fall, went 4-7 with a 3.49 ERA in a team-high 15 starts in 2015. He led the team in innings pitched (90.1) and strikeouts (71). His 71 Ks were tied for eighth most in the Big Ten.
The native of Novi has a career 3.35 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 161.0 innings of work.
As a rookie in 2014, Vieaux was an All-Big Ten Freshman Team selection. He transitioned to a starting role during the season and went on to post a 6-5 record and 3.18 ERA.
Vieaux went at least five innings in each of his first five starts in 2015, including on March 15 vs. UConn where he struck out a team-season and career-high 13 batters in 6.1 innings of work. The Spartans were the only team to defeat Illinois during the regular season, and it was Vieaux that earned the win against the Illini on March 29 as he allowed one run over seven innings.
Vieaux picked up road wins at Oregon on April 4, with seven strikeouts in six innings, and at Rutgers on April 17. He allowed just one earned run in 6.1 innings vs. Maryland in the opening game of the Big Ten Tournament.
Vieaux was one of a school-record eight Spartans selected in the 2015 MLB Draft. Juniors Cam Gibson (Detroit, fifth round) and Anthony Misiewicz (Seattle, 18th round) both signed professional contracts last month. Outgoing seniors Ryan Krill (New York Yankees, ninth round), Jeff Kinley (Miami, 28th round) Mick VanVossen (Washington, 28th round), Blaise Salter (Detroit, 31st round) and Mark Weist (San Francisco Giants, 37th round) were also selected and are currently playing in their respective team’s organizations.
