Tyrone Willingham was the first Black coach to take a team to the Rose Bowl and the first Black head coach in any sport at Notre Dame.

I asked him about the history James Franklin and Marcus Freeman establish in the college football semifinals on Thursday.

As all Spartans know, Willingham's roots can be tracked to Duffy Daugherty, Jimmy Raye and Sherman Lewis. As with college football milestones among
players, the milestones among coaches can be traced to Duffy. He hired Lewis in 1969 and Raye and 1972. He had two Black assistant on his staff at a
time other schools were getting around to hiring their first one.

But as you know from my books and website, much of Duffy's leadership is lost to history in myths about Bear Bryant. Even Michigan State doesn't fully understand Duffy's story.
