I just saw a guy named Mark Rogers give his opinion on MSU's chances for success this Fall. Right from the get go I can tell he has no idea of what he's talking about, and anyone that listens to this buffoon is going to be horribly deceived.
He lists a few key points in his prediction. One is we are "unsettled" at QB. Ok, on the surface that's 100% true, as the starter last year left the program. However, the implication is that we'll have a lesser productive QB filling in. Our O finished 116 in scoring offense last year. Does he actually think we'll be worse? Does he even know this? I think a more accurate description is that we'll have a healthy competitive position and an upgrade either way between a 2 year starter and former Elite 11 QB at Temple, or a rising star who has shown great promise in gaining some initial experience. I think it's safe to say that we'll have a major improvement in that position this year.
His next comment is that we've lost a lot of "good players." That implies the talent pool has diminished. Huh? Wut? Is there a SINGLE position that we haven't had a major upgrade in talent to, on a net basis? 40% of the roster has changed. Does he even read who we've brought in in the portal? You can tell just how lazy and uninformed this dude is by that comment alone. Truly pathetic. I mean pathetic. You guys know this already, but how about an almost 1000 yard rusher who is healthy now (does Rogers even know he was sick last year?) and might not crack the top 2 or 3 in the depth chart? Or our Online that has improved size, depth, experience, and not to be diminished, especially coaching? Zero recognition of reality. It's another example of how ill-informed some/most of these prognosticators are.
His next bullet point of MSU futility was the fact that we lost to Rutgers last year. So we're supposed to project that forward perpetually? Huh? What does that have to do with this year? Again, no recognition of reality. We all know that we didn't have a Spring season last year, coaches never met players until our 15 minute of a preseason camp that ended almost that quickly, and no real chance to install and practice the playbook. And he says this is Mel Tucker's 2nd year, which is absolutely true, but without mentioning the aforementioned, it leads someone to think that we had a normal, full, and traditional first year. At the very least it should be mentioned and recognized. Zip, nada, nothing. Pay no attention to reality! It's really amazing this guy has a forum.
The last comment I could tolerate was when he was going through our schedule (he predicts 3-9 btw) and he picked out a win vs Youngstown State, but he also said that you know MSU has "had trouble with MAC level opponents" in our history, so..... Are you kidding me? You mean like back in the George Perles era??? What!?!? And when UM lost to App State, did you project that forward too for a couple decades or did you pick those bozo's to be top 20 every year for the last 15 years? Even though they've only won .5 NC in the last 50 years or something and that they have a HUGE struggle to nose above 3rd place in the Eastern DIVISION of the BIG 10 every year? (And for good reason, as we know). I feel so embarrassed for this guy.
To be fair even more though, he's not alone. I remember I used to go buy Athlon's, Sporting News, Lindy's, etc. preseason mags. So many times I would read comically erroneous info. I mean basic stuff you'd get from a media guide and it would be screwed up. Players positions wrong, height/weight, graduated players still listed on the team, etc.
Really this leads me to send a huge, public thank you to Comp, Paul, and the staff. There really isn't a better source for all things MSU. I've been subscribing since Comp was feverishly working to get out a paper copy of Spartan Magazine before the next game would kick off, way back in the day (late 80's? early 90's?) I've probably put his kids threw school by now (just kidding), but it's been worth it the whole time. I can count on his accuracy and insight, and even knowledge of x and o's that us sick true Spartan fans love. I've never met Comp, nor Paul, but I almost think of them as friends.
Let's all have a great year and stay healthy! Go Green!!!!!!!
