Last weekend at the RCS event in Cleveland I spoke with a high-ranking official at Rivals.com about the thread view issue. He said when Rivals set out to revamp the message boards, they wanted to keep thread view as an option. But the decision was made to tailor the message boards for cell phones and mobile devices (smartly). The developers told Rivals.com there basically no way to make thread view look and work well on a cell phone.
The second thing is that the developers said that despite thread view's problems on cell phones, the developers could include a form of thread view with the new-look board, but it would have taken much longer to complete the project, and upkeep would have been a constant issue, and an expensive one.
So I was satisfied to know that they looked into it, but it became a road kill item for what I regard as practical and understandable reasons.
I still miss the initial ease of thread view. Topic view is too immersive for my tastes, and costing me an extra hour or more of perusal time every day. But I've noticed myself adapting to topic view by reading only the first sentence of every post as I scroll through a thread. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing, but I'm skimming more these days, out of necessity. I'm sure I'll miss some key points when skimming, but that's the way I'm doing it.
