Today on the Sirus national camp tour, Oregon o-tackle Tyler Johnstone discussed the joy of talking trash against tired opponents.

“Defensive linemen, we expect to be tired," he said. "The best part is when you see linebackers that are gassed and you are 290 pounds and just sprinting by them on a breakaway play. That’s the best time to talk trash when they can’t respond. It’s way more defeating when they are too tired to say anything back. The mind game comes into play heavily when they’re tired.

"I like to make players mad on the other team so that they are worried about me, they are not worried about their assignment and coming after the quarterback, they’re more worried about coming after me.

"Trash talking is a mental side of the game people rarely talk about, and it’s fun."

He didn't play last year, due to an injury. But he started 26 straight games in 2012 and 2013. He's back and healthy this year.

The part he said about tiring LBs certainly should resonate with MSU. Taiwan Jones (and d-end Marcus Rush) grew tired and sloppy in the late stages of that game last year, perhaps understandably so.

Mike Tressel pointed out this week that MSU used a different substitution philosophy in the Baylor game in comparison to the Oregon game. MSU would like to use 10 d-linemen, 6 LBs and 7 or 8 DBs this time against Oregon. It will be interesting to see if MSU has the depth to play that many guys this year, this early in the season.
