In the first round of the NCAA Tournament (it begins with the round of 16), three Big Ten teams won and advanced to the Elite Eight: Maryland beat Yale, Ohio State upset No. 4 Duke and Johns Hopkins beat No. 7 Virginia.

I was surprised by the small crowds. Syracuse - which is supposed to have the biggest fan following in lacrosse, right? - drew only 2,000 at the Carrier Dome for an NCAA Tournament game against Marist. This was an NCAA Tournament game at a home campus site. That's not good. I think MSU had that much for its Friday afternoon baseball game against Penn State, which had its game time rescheduled.

The Hopkins game at Virginia had a crowd of 1,751.

Great sport, but I thought fan interest was stronger than that.
