OT - Spartan reference in the Stanley Cup

So I was watching the 2nd game last night and the play-by-play announcer all of the sudden throws in -
"Duncan Keith the Michigan Stater with the puck..."

I have not heard a single reference to past college teams for any other player, is there a connection for the announcer or just an acknowledgement to the Spartans?
