I'm just curious and would like my Spartan bros to chime in on this.
Comp was talking about this on his Spartanmag Live YouTube account (highly recommended), where there will likely be essentially a bidding war for some players. Some deep pocket schools will benefit, others not so much. Players will be able to make money from their own "image and likeness" and websites, etc. I am wondering what all of you think about it. Let me know.
My thoughts are that if that happens, I'm done. Over. I think that will completely ruin the game, at least for me. I would have zero interest in the sport. I might as well just watch pro football and get a better product.
I know that there has been a certain faction of players and fans that have been pushing for comp'ing the players, to one degree or another, ever since I was in school in the 80's. I understand their ideas, and I think it's only natural to think that way if you thinking in a selfish manner. Here's what I mean. When most of us went to school, we paid a crap-load of money, mostly borrowed from our future, just to go there. Our tuition was paid by hard earned after tax dollars. We knew the deal going into it and accepted it, gladly. Athletes like the level we're talking about, at least D1, have talents that I never did. More freaking power to them! Obviously they worked super hard to set themselves apart and for that, get (like Cousins famously said) the PRIVILEGE of representing themselves and their families for a great school.
They will get fanfare (to one degree or another), praise, OPPORTUNITIES, life-lesson's, and so much more! They'll also get the chance to earn a degree, for free! That degree costs someone a lot of money, right? Boosters and others make those available and give a kid that absolutely deserves a scholarship a free shot at a degree. If you think of that as a trade off, or compensation, in return for them to play and receive all of the benefits I mentioned above and more, then I think that is a great deal. It's especially a great deal if you consider how much that family would have to make in pre-tax dollars to be able to pay for that tuition if a scholarship wasn't available. Take the cost of tuition and gross it up by a third and that's one heck of a phantom income they're getting.
Most of us never had our college paid for like these great athletes have. I'm so happy to have them represent us, especially the lower income guys that have such an opportunity now for themselves and potentially their family. They get stipends and many other free benefits for what they do. Don't say these guys aren't being paid. Seriously.
Anyway, I'm done with it and it won't be hard to give up. I've been a huge fan forever, have been a subscriber to the best Spartan publication out there since the late 80's (Spartan Magazine, don't you know!), but if this happens, and I think it sounds like it will in one form or another, I'm out. It would just so completely change the game, that to me I would lose all interest.
Maybe I'm out in left field; I don't know. I'm just curious as to what the truest Spartan fans (members of this board) think. Let me know. Go Green!
