Today was somewhat uneventful as far as MSU angles are concerned. There were no Jamal Lyles or Dennis Finley type of risers at today's camp that might command an MSU offer, as has been the case in the past at this event. However, in those days, MSU usually had a dozen and a half scholarship slots available, whereas the Spartans have only six to eight this year.

MSU took some time to scout some 2017s and rub elbows, but you didn't get the idea they were really honing in on some of the targets.

Xavier Kelly visited MSU this week, and MSU is maintaining dialogue with him, but you don't get the idea it's a full-blast situation for MSU right now.

MSU offered three-star Lake Forest, Ill. DE Daniel Joseph several weeks ago. However, MSU has picked up commitments from two defensive ends in the past week in Justin King and Auston Robertson. MSU apparently is still interested in Khalid Kareem, who did not participate at the SMSB camp.

Joseph had a pretty good day today. He's 6-3, 240, nicely athletic, nicely skilled. Good prospect. He's not a drop-dead amazing talent, but he's good, quality enough for an MSU offer.

MSU coaches were watching d-line drills today, but not really hounding it, because MSU is kind of full. Meanwhile, Michigan coaches showed Joseph a little bit of attention, and then more and more as Joseph's day went on. Mattison was on him, and Harbaugh had a long talk and walk with him.

When Paul and Matt asked Joseph about his contact with MSU, he said he hasn't heard much from MSU lately, but blamed that on himself for not reaching out. In actuality, if you do the math, our read is that MSU has had to back off on him, while being very happy with King and Robertson.

So today, some of the interesting fallout was seeing Michigan become aggressive with one of the Chicago prospects MSU didn't have room for. That could end being a real good deal for Michigan. The bottom line is that Illinois and Iowa might continue to lose out to Big Ten East teams for Chicago kids recruiting year.

As for 2017s, Hillsborough, Fla. DE Zach Carter (6-4, 237, wiry strong and lean) has offers from Florida, Clemson, Penn State, Indiana and others. I saw him have a brief interaction with Harlon Barnett after one drill, for like one second when he went up to Barnett. So at the end of the day I asked Carter about his offers, and I asked him if he had heard from Michigan State. He said, "A little bit, and that's actually who I'm looking for right now." He was looking around for MSU coaches.

He looked pretty good, promising. Still need to see more from him. But MSU is on his radar, and vice-versa after today.
