Much was made about the NFL Spartans who were supposed to attend the camp and offer support or pointers or something.

Actually, the camp went off pretty much like it always does. There were a couple of NFL guys around, like Dion Sims, Drew Stanton and Will Gholston, but not many. They are good guys, and they are happy to be around and stay involved. Sims said his family is moving out of Michigan, to Atlanta or Florida or something, I forget which. But he mentioned that he doesn't get back to town as often as he would like. He was on campus last fall for the Nebraska game.

It was good to see Sims. But he isn't the type of personality that would jump into a drill and coach up a kid. I'm sure that Dantonio and Staten were glad to see him back on campus, but it really wasn't that big of a deal.

And the other NFL players who were supposed to be there, I guess they didn't show up or they never intended to be there.

The only NFL Spartan that I saw address the campers was Stanton, at the end of camp. Dantonio introduced him and Stanton spoke for about a minute or two. I was in the stands and couldn't hear what he was saying. At that point, I was cursing myself for not being on the field to record it. I suspect that Stanton was telling them, among other things, that he too once camped at MSU and so forth.

Stanton was his usual gracious, amiable, humble, laid back self. He spent a little time with DeWeaver and Connor Cook.

The day ended up being a very good camp overall for MSU, with the Rison commitment, with Lavert Hill in attendance, more bonding with Donnie Corley, the current commitments showing out, and some fine 2017s making some noise and beginning their relationships with MSU. The NFL thing might be a good idea in theory, or for the future, but - unless I was missing something - it was of little impact on this day. The camp participants, and the coaching of camp participants by current MSU staff members, took center stage.
