Lots of posters are debating high schoolers deciding between playing time vs strength of roster in choosing a school. I think the very low rate of players leaving MSU seeking playing time elsewhere shows that the kids our coaches get believe in working hard to earn playing time and are not "dodging" competition at their position. I would think that getting a 5th year(red shirt) benefits more kids than playing immediately. More strength, more rep's in practice, more coaching, and more time to get a solid education which most are going to need after football.
Hell, all kids want to play, but from why I'm seeing, our commit's in large part, are sticking with the program and then earning their spot to shine. As a parent, I would not be wary of a red shirt year, but rather embrace it for the above-mentioned reasons.
