Had a very unexpected run it with a U of M fan today. I've read other posts about such encounters on this board but had never experienced one myslef. To be honest I really can't believe what took place. I was signing up for a men's senior golf league at a local senior center (I'm 66 years old by the way) and a very nice woman was showing me the tee time sign up sheet. I had on my Spartan baseball cap. This 30 something mail man walks up to the counter, leans over to me and says quite loudly "Spartys suck, Spartys suck, Sparty's suck!" He then laughs then picks up the mail. There were several other people at the counter. I said to him in a very polite but firm manner, "Excuse me, but out of curiousity, why in the world would you say soemthing like that? I mean, I don't understand such behaviour. I don't know you and I have no idea why one would say such a thing to a perfect stranger. Are you a Michigan fan? What would prompt someone to say such a thing? Are you trying to belittle me in front of these people? Are you looking for a fight? I really don't understand what would make a person say such a thing?"

I thought his jaw was going to drop to the floor. He put his hands up and said, "hey I'm just the mail man."

I responded, "well that's an admirable profession, it still doesn't explain such behaviour?"

He replied, "hey I'm a fan of all the state of Michigan. I root for all state of Michigan teams."

I said, "well, that's good but it makes your remarks make even less sense to me."

With that he just dropped his head and slinked out the door. I finished my business with the the woman behind the counter but she looked a little shaken.

What is with these people? I will never for the life of me understand why some U of M fans behave this way. I cannot understand why they think they can approach perfect strangers with such an attitude. Do our fans do this? I've never witnessed such behaviour. The ironic thing is, the other three guys I play with are U of M grads and are perfect gentleman. We all grew up together and played golf together in high school. Go figure.
