Thinking about Baylor

Yesterday I used Baylor as an example in a question I posed regarding many media types and their selective (or perhaps ignorant of details) use of concern for a program’s success longevity. How much longer can MSU stay a power when considering the expectation of others in the same division? Baylor is rarely questioned in this matter. This got me thinking about Baylor and their future.

Many here became annoyed with Briles considering his statement before and after the Cotton Bowl. He is a very good coach, the type of coach that fights with everything he has for his team. Most would appreciate that if it was their team he was fighting for.

He has a fertile recruiting base and his system is producing very good, consistent results. I do wonder if his system will be as productive in the long run. It is based on speed and the ability to get the ball to that speed quickly.

For those “old school” maggers, I compare this to the classic Nintendo Football game. I did not own a Nintendo system, my buddy did, and we would play every time I went to his house. He played a lot and was quite good. To even things out, I was allowed to employ a sideline to sideline screen game, while he was not. This kept our games competitive, yet I would be killed if a more conventional rule set was employed.

I think Briles system is similar and quite dependent on the future success Bryce Petty. Griffin received a lot of attention but has not been able to stay healthy enough or produce consistently at the pro level. Briles opponents will have a more solid argument when recruiting against him if Petty fares the same way. “His system does not prepare you for the next level” will be used by everyone with some substance behind the argument.
