Caveat: I am using Rivals star system for this data. We all know it isn't perfect but we also know that extremes are usually significant.
Teams that have had top 10 recruiting classes but so far, are underwhelming by their lofty standards
1) Alabama: they have been as dominant as Kentucky basketball has been with four straight number 1 classes, according to most of the services.
3.56 avg commit, 17 verbals, six 3 stars, two 2 stars. Compare this to Ohio State, USC or LSU
2) Oklahoma, 3.17 avg, but only 6 commits, one 4 star, five 3 star guys.
3) Texas A & M , 3.21 avg, 14 commits, ten 3 stars
4) Notre Dame, 3.18 avg, 11 commits, three 4 stars, seven 3 stars, 1 2 star.
Next we have the group that is not taking advantage of the very good year they had
5) Pitt, 2.86 avg, only seven commits, one 4 star, four 3 stars, two 2 stars. I know their record wasn't great but they hired Narduzzi.
6) Missouri, 3.0 avg, 11 commits, two 4 star, seven 3 stars, two 2 stars. They have won the SEC East in back to back years.
7) Maryland, 2.69 avg, 16 verbals, half of the 16 commits are eight 2 star commits.
8) Rutgers, 2.75 average, 16 verbals, zero 4 stars, twelve 3 stars, four two stars.
9) Mississippi State, 2.92 avg, 12 verbals, zero 4 stars, eleven 3 stars, one 2 star. They are coming of their best year in decades. They can't compete in the SEC West if they don't upgrade their recruiting. Last year they had a fringe top 15 class.
Spiraling downward
10) Vanderbilt, 2.75 with 8 recruits. Franklin had back to back nine win seasons, Mason is in trouble. They have always been a SEC doormat but expectations got raised and 2.75 avg recruit classes is tough sledding in the SEC.
11) Iowa, 2.65 avg, 20 commits already, zero 4 stars, seven two stars. Look at their program and compare it to ours for the 20 years before Dantonio came to town. Talk about regression.
It is still early. I am sure Bama finishes strong, but I felt this was worth generating some discussion. We still have almost 60 days before our opener to find subjects to discuss.
Thoughts?
