My understanding from someone close to this situation is that there is much more to this story.
The Redskins had scheduled a press event for Monday, July 13th to announce their new "name", including logo, uniforms and all other brand elements.
When the Redskins Legal team went through the final Trademark review, they were very surprised to find that the new "name" was already trademarked and owned by another party.
They apparently went into panic mode and tried a last minute aggressive push to purchase the rights to the trademark. Despite a significant financial offer, the "rights" holder quickly turned down the offer and told the Redskins legal team they had no interest in doing business with Dan Snyder.
Snyder and his team went to option 2 - and believe it or not - the fallback name was also already trademarked as well.
Does that sound like the complete incompetence you would expect from Dan Snyder and his cronies. His Marketing Team, Ad Agencies, and Legal Team should be immediately fired for malpractice.

Effective immediately, Washington will call itself the "Washington Football Team" pending the adoption of a new name, the franchise announced.
This is not a final renaming and rebranding for the team; this is the name it wants to use until the adoption of a new name at some point.
The team will continue the process of retiring the former name and hopes to be entirely rid of it on physical and digital spaces in the next 50 days, by the Sept. 13 regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Washington will not have any change to its color scheme. It will still use burgundy and gold, and the logo on the helmet will be replaced by each player's number in gold.
