After Michigan State softball's mid-week contest against Detroit Mercy was canceled due to impending cold temperatures, the Spartan softball team will head to College Park, Maryland Thursday for the second B1G weekend of the season.

Maryland enters the weekend with a 22-8 record prior to playing a single game against Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday night. Michigan State is 10-14 overall after going 1-2 in its opening B1G series against Wisconsin last weekend.

ABOUT MARYLAND
Maryland is 22-8 this season but dropped its first three B1G contests of the year last weekend to Indiana. The Terps own two ranked victories this season defeating then #22 Oregon and then #3 Oklahoma State at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge.

Michigan State is 15-12 all-time against Maryland but are just 4-6 in the last 10 meetings. Maryland has been a fixture on the MSU schedule since their inaugural B1G season in 2015. The only season the two sides didn't meet was the COVID canceled 2020 season. MSU is 2-6 against Maryland since Mark Montgomery was hired in 2020.

Nationally Maryland ranks No. 64 in batting average (.294), No. 34 in doubles (45), No. 91 in ERA (2.89), No. 35 in fielding (.974), No. 63 in on-base percentage (.379), No. 57 in scoring 5.47), No. 71 in SLG (.448) and No. 28 in stolen bases (59).

Jaeda McFarland leads the team in batting hitting .394 on the season with 11 stolen bases. Amelia Lech has been one of the premier power hitters in the country this season with 11 long balls to date along with 33 RBIs. Megan Mikami leads the team with 15 stolen bases on 17 attempts. Kiley Goff is among the best catchers at throwing runners out, ranking No. 14 nationally in caught runners (9).

In the circle Trinity Schlotterbeck and Courtney Wyche have made 28 of Maryland's 30 starts. Schlotterbeck has posted a 2.62 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP along with a .262 batting average against in 66.2 innings. Wyche brings the heat with a 3.23 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, a .256 batting average against and 89 strikeouts this season. Keira Bucher is the national leader in saves with nine so far this season in 18 relief appearances. Bucher has thrown 31.1 innings allowing a .200 batting average against with a 2.23 ERA and a .99 WHIP.

LAST WEEK REWIND
The Spartans opened last week with a non-conference victory over Central Michigan, 3-0. Michigan State went 1-2 in its B1G opening series against Wisconsin last weekend. The Spartans took game two by a final score of 8-3. Wisconsin took games one and three by scores of 5-3 and 9-3.

Several Spartans had standout performances last week:

Sophomore Faith Guidry posted a 1.72 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched allowing a .211 opposing batting average. Guidry pitched two complete games and earned a save for MSU. Junior AJ Militello led the team in batting last week posting a .417 batting average along with a triple and a home run. Militello led the team with four runs scored.

LOOKING FORWARD
Michigan State will play a total of five games at Secchia Stadium (weather permitting) next week. The Spartans open the week with a pair of mid-week contests before a three-game B1G series over the weekend.

Oakland comes to town for a non-conference match up on Tuesday night. MSU is 25-7 all-time against Oakland and went 1-1 against the Golden Grizzlies last season. Michigan State returns to the field on Wednesday night for the first game of a home and home series against Michigan.

Iowa will play at Secchia Stadium for the first time since 2012 when they arrive to play the Spartans next weekend. Michigan State has not played a traditional B1G series against the Hawkeyes since 2014 in Iowa City.
