EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball head coach Jake Boss Jr. announced that Tommy Merlo has joined the Spartan staff as director of operations.
"We're excited to welcome Tommy back to East Lansing," Boss said. "He did a tremendous job for us as a student manager. He has a genuine love for all things Michigan State University, and is going to be a tremendous addition to our baseball program."
Merlo returns to Michigan State after serving as the team manager with the baseball team in 2022. He comes to MSU from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he served as the Leopards' Director of Baseball Operations & Analytics for the 2023 season.
"I am honored and grateful to join the Michigan State baseball coaching staff as the Director of Operations," Merlo said. "I could not be more excited for this opportunity, and I am looking forward to pursuing championship level baseball in East Lansing."
At Lafayette, Merlo coordinated all team travel and meals, in addition to operating multiple technology platforms to utilize in player development, as well as working on opponent scouting reports and practice plans. He also oversaw Lafayette's prospect/team/player development camps.
In the summer of 2022, Merlo worked for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League as Director of Baseball Operations and Analytics, in addition to their Major League Baseball scout liaison. He coordinated the creation of scouting reports on opposing pitchers through the use of multiple technology platforms, as well as the main point of contact for all MLB Scouts visiting Falmouth.
During his time as an MSU baseball manager, Merlo charted and recorded in-game data for player development and coaching staff use, along with assisting coaches in practice drills. He also managed equipment for practices and games.
A native of Jamison, Pennsylvania, Merlo graduated from Michigan State in May of 2022 with his bachelor's degree in special education - learning disabilities.
