HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Six Michigan State Spartans – 125-pound redshirt junior Tristan Lujan, 141-pounder senior Jordan Hamdan, 157-pound senior Chase Saldate, 165-pound senior Caleb Fish, 197-pound redshirt freshman Kael Wisler, and 285-pound redshirt freshman Josh Terrill – each had individual place finishes at the two-day Ken Kraft Midlands Championships this weekend.

MSU finished fourth out of 49 total participating squads with a total team score of 84.5.

Hamdan and Fish were the two highest place finishes, each finishing fifth in their respective weight classes.

Hamdan (Hudson, Mich.) went 6-2 over the weekend. The senior dropped his second match on Friday to Evan Mougalian (Penn RTC) in a 9-5 decision. In the consolation rounds, Hamdan won four-straight matches that was highlighted with his biggest win of the year, defeating No. 23-ranked Dylan Layton out of Cleveland State in a 14-2 major decision. Hamdan controlled Layton the entire seven minutes of wrestling recording four takedowns and allowing Layton's only points coming off two escapes in the third period. Hamdan would fall to Tom Crook in an 8-2 decision in the consolation semifinal match then captured fifth with a medical forfeit.

No. 10-ranked Fish (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) started his weekend off to a fast start with his fastest fall of the season defeating Air Force's Jack Ganos in 54 seconds, advancing to the quarterfinals where he defeated Harvard's Josh Kim in a 2-0 decision. After falling to Peyton Hall from West Virginia, and Beau Mantanona (Michigan), the senior captain would win his fifth-place match for his third-straight tournament podium finish.

No. 16-ranked Saldate (Gilroy, Calif.) went 5-2 overall with a pair of first round falls over Jorden Johnson (SIU Edwardsville) at the 1:50 mark, and James Harrington (Harvard) in a season-high 1:07, followed by tech fall and major decision victories to capture seventh.

Terrill (Holt, Mich.) entered the week tied second in the country in wins (16) and added five more wins to that total recording two falls and major decision victories. Terrill registered the second fastest fall on the team in his seventh-place match against John Stout (Penn) in 28 seconds for his third tournament placement this season.

No. 32-ranked Lujan (Selma, Calif.) placed eighth with back-to-back tech fall victories against Davian Guanajuato (SIU Edwardsville), 17-2, and a 15-0 shutout over Kaden Chinavare (Central Michigan). In a razor-thin seventh-place match, Lujan fell to Ohio State's Vinny Kilkeary in a sudden-victory match, 4-1, to finish eighth.

Wisler (New Boston, Mich.) went 4-3 overall to place eighth. In the consolation round of six, Wisler met No. 32-ranked John Crawford (Franklin & Marshall) for the second time this season, and defeated Crawford for the second time this season in a tight 4-1 tiebreaker battle.

The Michigan State wrestling team will be back in action on Jan. 5 as it takes on American in East Lansing.
