FOOTBALL Michigan State's Jonathan Smith is 'getting close' to figuring out starters

In terms of playing rotations, Smith said that he and the coaching staff are “getting close” to figuring out who will play the first snaps on offense and defense. No matter who starts the game, though, there are multiple positions where Smith feels comfortable rotating players in and out of the game.

“We talk about 22 starters, which yeah, we’ll throw 22 guys out there, but I feel good that we’re going to play multiple guys in some positions,” Smith explained. “I think about the defensive line. We’re going to rotate through that. We feel five, six guys could rotate in the interior of the (defensive) line. Linebacker, same way. Receiver-wise, we will play more than two or three guys. Even the tight end spot, with (Jack) Velling, (Brennan) Parachek coming along here, Mola’s (Ademola Faleye) had a great camp, Mike (Masunas), you’re going to see multiple guys there. I mean, shoot, you might even see more than just five throughout the game at (offensive) line.”

Article on Ohio State buying players. It’s College football in name only at this point. That said, how much do we have allocated to buy players? Can anyone provide a good estimate?

Just like in the free market, brand power will attract the most $$$. Probably only 5–10 teams MAX with any shot at all at a national title.

FOOTBALL Dr. G&W's Preseason Football Analysis, Part Seven: Bad Betting Advice

We have finally reach the 7th and final installment of my annual math-driven college football preview.

In this installment, I dig back through the data and compare is to the current betting lines to look for potentially good bets. As I have stated before, I don't actually bet on sports, but the math and the analysis of the betting lines are super interesting to me. But the accuracy of my predictions is highly linked to the accuracy of the collection of preseason rankings (from Phil Steele, Athlon, Lindy's, SP+, and ESPN) relative to Vegas. Sometime these picks work out and sometimes they don't. The good news (for me) is that I have fun either way.

I hope that you enjoyed this series. This is my second favorite project of the year behind my annual March Madness bracket analysis. Finally, as my title suggests, this piece is also foreshadowing of the week Bad Betting Advice column that I have been writing for a while, both here and as during my stint with The Only Colors.

It's game week, Spartan fans. Let's the games begin.
