OFF TOPIC: Willie Mays, supreme baseball talent considered best to ever play, dies at 93

In my opinion, Willie was the best of my generation. He was a five-tool player, ran the bases well, was a great outfielder, and had tremendous power.

Believe it or not, we didn't hear much about Hank Aaron other than the power. Of course, earlier generations had Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, and Ted Williams.

OFF TOPIC: MSU Olympic medalists revisited

Hopefully this is the list of all MSU athletes and a couple of coaches competing as athletes that I could gather from different websites, esp the MSU Athletics site. If you know of anyone whom I missed please let me know and I will add them. Interesting that swimming, a sport cancelled recently has the most medalists.

OTHER SCHOOLS: Former Wolverine Coach Les Miles is suing LSU...

Former Wolverine Coach Les Miles is suing LSU, claiming that vacated wins put him below the Hall of Fame threshold.

In 2023, LSU vacated 37 wins because of recruiting violations.

The vacated wins dropped Miles' overall record from 145-73, a winning percentage of .665, to 108-73, a winning percentage of .597.

Coaches must have a career-winning percentage of .600 in at least 100 games to qualify for selection to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Miles played at Michigan (1972-1975) and coached for the Wolverines from 1987-1994

More on Tabron and some advice he received from head coach Jonathan Smith:

NEW: Favorite Michigan State Athletics moments from the 2023-24 season...

Yes, obviously the 2023 football season wasn't great for the Spartans and the men's basketball season didn't live up to many people's expectations.

However, there were still some great moments dating back to last fall.

My personal favorite was the Michigan vs. Michigan State Big Ten Championship Game in hockey.

First of all, the crowd was absolutely electric. It was one of the best environments I've ever been in for a sporting event period.

It was a fantastic game as well, back and forth. Went to overtime.

And then Patrick Geary ripped a shot from the blue line, it ringed the post and went in.

The crowd went nuts. On the ice, sticks, helmets, gloves went flying in the air as they rushed toward Geary to celebrate.

It was a moment I'll remember for a long time.

Let's hear some of your favorite moments...

OTHER MSU SPORTS Heath Baldwin is close to representing MSU & Team USA in the Paris Olympics

In April, Michigan State decathlete Heath Baldwin set a new personal best of 8470 at the Mt. SAC Relays. That is the best score by any American decathlete in 2024 and the fifth best score in the world so far this year. It was a Big Ten record and was the seventh best score in the history of the NCAA.

The score also met the Olympic standard - and the timing is just right for Baldwin, with the Paris 2024 Olympics looming.

More on Baldwin's journey below as he will compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials starting on June 21:

Half Full...just barely.

I saw a thread discussing the (apparent) lack of 'insider' scoop and it has me thinking about my state of mind on my beloved Spartans. I think it it mostly the time of year, but it's partially this 'new world' of college football has just worn me down to a consistent 'meh'. I know I'll be 'living and dying' with every play come gametime and will instantly get up to speed with the deluge of new names....gotta 'luv' anyone wearing 'the Green'!. I'm just hopeful most of our transfers are 'diamonds' that just needed a 2nd (third?) opportunity and not just scraping up NIL $$.

RECRUITING Michigan State offer 'means everything' for 2026 CB Jalon Copeland

Class of 2026 three-star cornerback Jalon Copeland discusses his relationship with Michigan State cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin and his recent offer from the Spartans.

“Coach Meat has been recruiting me since I was a freshman,” Copeland told Spartans Illustrated. “We talk everyday now, and he wants me there with him.”

NEW COMMIT: 2025 WR Charles Taplin commits to 'family-oriented' Michigan State

One of the handful of 2025 official visitors on campus last weekend for Michigan State was 6-foot-2 wide receiver Charles Taplin out of Red Oak High School in Red Oak, Texas. Following the trip, Taplin was ready to become a Spartan.

After building strong relationships with head coach Jonathan Smith, wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins and offensive graduate assistant coach Cordale Grundy, Taplin announced his commitment to the Spartans on Friday.

Spartans Illustrated spoke with the three-star prospect to discuss his decision to commit to Michigan State and get more details on his recent official visit to East Lansing.

"First, they treated me and family with amazing hospitality, and second, I trust that Coach Hawkins will develop me as a wide receiver," Taplin told Spartans Illustrated about why he chose to commit to Michigan State. "Also, their pro-style offense will prepare me well for the league (NFL.) What stood out to me about their program was the coaches were very family-oriented."

FOOTBALL Inside information?

It’s been awhile since anything major has been “revealed” here and although the other sports coverage has been fantastic, it sorta feels like the “insider” info has been scarce. @DavidHarns has been relatively quiet so I’m wondering if the new staff has closed ranks and made that type of information difficult to come by….TOS’s seem to be steady with their CB’s as well so it doesn’t seem that the recruit side of things has changed much. Just inside the program. Thoughts?
