ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Junior Chase Saldate reached the semifinals of the 157-pound bracket, and Michigan State wrestling collected 13 individual victories on the first day of the 2023 Big Ten Championships inside the Crisler Center on the campus of the University of Michigan.

On an individual basis, a trio of Spartans picked up automatic bids to the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Saldate's run to the semifinals at 157 guaranteed that he would be one of nine Big Ten grapplers to reach the sport's grandest stage. The Green & White also saw redshirt senior 184-pounder Layne Malczewski and graduate 197-pounder Cameron Caffey land a spot at the NCAA Championships, with each wrestler picking up at least two wins apiece. The Big Ten will have nine wrestlers representing the league as automatic qualifiers in each of the aforementioned weight classes.

Saldate and Caffey have each only suffered one loss through the first two sessions of the Big Ten Championships, with both wrestlers set to continue action in Sunday's consolation semifinals. The Gilroy, California, native Saldate saw his individual record move to 25-5 on Saturday, leaving him one win shy of tying his career-best mark of 26, set last season. Caffey, a native of Carbondale, Illinois, climbs to 21-4 overall this season with an 8-1 record in tournament action coupled with a 13-3 dual match ledger. In his inaugural match of the tournament, Malczewski extended his team lead in pins, securing his 11th win of the season by fall against 11th-seeded Evan Bates of Northwestern.

Michigan State's highest-ranked wrestler fit the billing on the opening day of the Big Ten Championships, as Saldate got out to a dominant start against 13th-seeded Andrew Clark of Rutgers. Saldate utilized a 2-0 edge in takedowns to dispatch with the Scarlet Knight starter by way of a 5-2 decision in his opening bout of the tournament. In his quarterfinal test with fifth-seeded Iowa wrestler Cobe Siebrecht, Saldate opened the bout on an absolute tear, coupling a quick takedown with an emphatic four-point near fall on the near side of the mat. Siebrecht managed an escape about 20 seconds later, but Saldate remained physical and forced another takedown, bringing an 8-1 lead into the second. Siebrecht started the ensuing period on bottom and mustered another escape, but allowed Saldate to secure the riding time advantage, culminating in a 9-2 decision for the Spartan star. Despite a valiant effort in the semifinals against top-ranked and top-seeded Peyton Robb from Nebraska, Saldate dropped a 4-3 decision that moved him into Sunday's consolation semifinals.

Fourth-seeded Caffey opened his fifth and final Big Ten Championships with a solid showing over Michigan's Brendin Yatooma, logging a 4-1 decision in his first bout of the day. Caffey executed a single-leg shot with 26 seconds left in the frame and swept out Yatooma's other leg for the score. Caffey built up a solid riding time edge in the second, added an escape in the third and tacked on the riding time point for the win. Against Iowa's fifth-seeded Jacob Warner in the quarterfinals, the Hawkeyes were able to score the 3-2 decision to advance. Despite the difficult result, Caffey was able to bounce back in the ensuing consolation matches and score a 4-1 decision over Rutgers' ninth-seeded Billy Janzer, followed by a high-octane 10-7 decision over Minnesota's ninth-seeded Michial Foy. The Spartan captain will resume action on Sunday in the consolation semifinals.

Captain and 184-pound starter Malczewski opened his fourth Big Ten Championships with an emphatic result against Northwestern's No. 11-seeded Evan Bates, pinning his Wildcat challenger at the 3:41 mark of the match. Malczewski defended a Bates shot perfectly, rolled through for a takedown and dominated the position for a four-point near fall to take an early 6-0 lead. After starting the second with a reversal, the Spartan managed to stick Bates for the bonus-point win. In his next match against Minnesota's No. 3-seeded Isaiah Salazar, the Golden Gophers managed to add to their solid opening session with an 8-5 decision. In the second round of the consolation bracket, Malczewski returned to the win column with an impressive 6-2 decision over Purdue's 12th-seeded Ben Vanadia, but was forced to medically forfeit his ensuing match. Malczewski will continue action at the Big Ten Championships on Sunday in the seventh-place bout.

Junior 125-pounder Tristan Lujan started the day off for the Spartans on mat one, but could not muster the upset over Northwestern's sixth-seeded Michael DeAugustino. The Wildcat starter booked a 5-1 decision over Lujan to kick the tournament off. In Lujan's consolation first round match, he returned to the win column with a 4-1 decision over No. 14-seeded Andre Gonzales of Ohio State. The Selma, California, native got in on a single leg in the first period, added an escape in the second and tacked on the riding time point while surrendering a lone Gonzales escape en route to his first win of the postseason. In his consolation second round match against Wisconsin's No. 4-seeded Eric Barnett, Lujan dropped a 4-1 decision to conclude his B1G Championship run. In the first round of the ninth-place bracket, Lujan booked a steady 8-0 major decision over Gonzales that will allow him to continue competing for an NCAA Championship qualification.

Graduate 133-pounder Rayvon Foley opened his day against Iowa's eighth-seeded Brody Teske on mat three, ultimately dropping a 4-1 decision in his tournament-opener. Foley's second match of the day came in the second round of the consolation bracket at 133, with the Ann Arbor, Michigan, native squaring off against Rutgers' seventh-seeded Joe Heilmann. The Scarlet Knights picked up the victory, securing a 5-2 decision on mat one. Foley will resume action in the ninth-place bracket second round on Sunday, and remains in contention for an automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships.

At 165 pounds, junior Spartan Caleb Fish electrified the Crisler Center with an opening-round pin over 10th-seeded Bubba Wilson of Nebraska. With Fish leading 3-0 after the first period, Wilson took bottom to start the second and managed to tie the bout at 4-all. The Eaton Rapids, Michigan, native Spartan snapped back with a flurry of scoring opportunities, but was ultimately able to complete the pin at the 4:45 mark of the match. In the 165-pound quarterfinal, Fish battled hard but dropped a 4-2 decision to Michigan's second-seeded Cameron Amine in sudden victory. In his ensuing consolation second round match, Fish faced eighth-seeded Dan Braunagel of Illinois, dropping the match by fall at the 6:00 mark. Fish remains in contention for an NCAA automatic qualification, and will continue wrestling in the ninth-place bracket at 165 on Sunday.

Michigan State's only freshman starter took the mat at 174 pounds, with Ceasar Garza starting his first postseason tournament against No. 6 seed Indiana wrestler Donnell Washington. In their third meeting this season, Washington built up a 3-0 advantage in takedowns and defeated Garza by major decision, 8-0, to start the day off. In his consolation match later in the first session, Garza turned things around to book his first career postseason win with a 3-2 decision over No. 14-seeded Cooper Noehre from Purdue. Garza's first appearance at the Big Ten Championships came to a close, as fifth-seeded Edmond Ruth from Illinois logged a 6-2 decision in the consolation second round against the Oakdale, California, native Spartan.

Heavyweight graduate Ryan Vasbinder opened the 2023 B1G Championships against fifth-seeded Trent Hillger on mat four, falling by pin at the 3:50 mark of the match. The Wyoming, Michigan, native sought his first win of the postseason in the ensuing matchup, ultimately battling for a 3-2 decision over No. 13-seeded Illinois wrestler Matt Wroblewski. The Illini booked an early takedown, but Vasbinder escaped four seconds later. Trailing 2-1 after the first period, Vasbinder got free on an escape to tie things at 2-all heading into the final two minutes. Utilizing a masterful ride, the Spartan remained tough on top for the full two minutes to secure both the riding time point and a 3-2 decision. In his consolation second round matchup with Rutgers' sixth-seeded Boone McDermott, the Scarlet Knights picked up a 4-0 decision that landed Vasbinder in the ninth-place bracket. The Spartan mustered a grueling 1-0 decision in his final bout of the day against Wroblewski in the first round of the ninth-place bracket, leaving him in contention for an automatic NCAA Championship berth.

Redshirt junior 141-pounder Jordan Hamdan started his day with a back-and-forth battle against Minnesota's fifth-seeded Jake Bergeland, logging a pair of impressive takedowns in the first period to take a 4-2 lead. Bergeland logged an escape to start the second, and managed to tie the match at 5-all as time expired. In the sudden victory period, Bergeland managed to escape with a takedown with 1:03 remaining to book the SV-1, 7-5 decision. In the ensuing consolation matchup, Hamdan faced off against No. 13 seed Cayden Rooks of Indiana. Despite a scoreless first period, Rooks utilized a pair of takedowns to finalize a 7-2 decision that forced Hamdan into the ninth-place hunt. In the first round of that bracket, Hamdan fell to Rooks once again, this time by way of a 10-3 decision, ultimately concluding the Hudson, Michigan, native's run in Ann Arbor.

After starting with an impressive early throw for a takedown, redshirt junior 149-pounder Peyton Omania surrendered a reversal to eighth-seeded Iowa grappler Brody Teske. As soon as the reversal was called by the official, Omania was granted injury time. After examination by the Michigan State athletic training staff, it was determined that Omania could not continue his opening round match, resulting in an injury forfeit at the 2:03 mark. The Spartans elected to medically forfeit Omania's consolation matchup, finishing his run at the B1G Championships.
