I re watched Cotton Bowl last night. Just amazing final Defensive series by MSU. They knocked Petty silly. What I don't get is the play call by Briles ( the OC).

I went frame by frame. When Petty releases the ball the clock is at 6 seconds, when Bullough grabs the ball the clock is at 5 seconds.

Now assuming the Baylor receiver catches the ball in stride at 5 seconds, he is at the 22 yard line. Assuming he has decent speed, it would take him 4.5 seconds to run 40 yards. That would have put him at the Baylor 38 with 0.5 seconds left. By the time he took a knee, the clock would run out. No time to call time out or get field goal team out.

Was the play designed to just have him try and make it all the way to the end zone? A lateral play?

Just an odd play. A scared call, as Briles and Petty knew they didn't have the protection to throw ball deep.
