When Jerod Mayo was hired, Owner Robert Kraft was asked about whether race played a part in the hiring:
"I'm really colorblind, in terms of, I know what I feel like on Sunday when we lose," Kraft said. He added that he hired Mayo because the coach was the best person for the job and it's simply coincidental that Mayo is Black. "He happens to be a man of color," Kraft said, "but I chose him because I believe he's best to do the job."
Mayo responded with: "I do see color," Mayo said. "Because I believe if you don't see color, you can't see racism."
Mayo was the Patriots' inside linebacker Coach from 2019 until he was named head coach in 2024. The problem was he had never been a defensive coordinator on any level, let alone a head coach, when he became the head coach of the Patriots.

New Patriots coach Jerod Mayo is right: 'If you don't see color, you can't see racism'
New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo did something remarkable at his introductory press conference. He spoke honestly and bluntly about race.
