After watching the recent HBO Real Sports segment on Jim Harbaugh, I came to my own conclusion about comparing Dantonio vs. Jimmy Boy. Its night and day.
I thought about the way our former and current players look at Dantonio after their MSU experience. There's nothing but respect and admiration for the man.
I watched how proud Waynes was to be photoed with him and coach Barnett during his draft day. Cousins asking our head coach to write the introduction in his book. During the Thorpe Award, Dennard sitting next Dantonio, who was like a proud father. There was mutual admiration all the way around.
I, personally, enjoyed how the players worked hard, learned and achieved victories under our coaches, but celebrated as well. Those locker room dances were priceless. Life is an experience meant to be enjoyed.
There seems to be a sense of family with the current MSU program and I think that framework is laid during the recruiting process. You don't hard sell a family member into a decision and Dantonio knows that. Now, I think the recruits are finally seeing it fully. They're finding the truth through the smoke and mirrors.
Now, getting back to Harbaugh. When I watched that HBO segment, a lot of former players, mostly 49ers, really hated that guy. They were more than happy to see him go. When Jim was asked about the way his former players felt about him, he gave off the deer-in-the-headlights stare, because he was oblivious how people felt about him. Winning was the only thing to him.
Later in that segment, the cameras were following him around at the Michigan practices and you can tell its that Old School - Woody Hayes/Bo thing was going on as he was getting in his players' faces with those crazy eyes. I don't think that washes with today's teenagers. I also think back about former Harbaugh college players, like Richard Sherman, had nothing good to say about his former college coach after his Stanford experience.
Jim is going to win games, and so is Dantonio, but the overall experience is going to be better at MSU, because our coach gets it. He understands people. I don't think Harbaugh gets people at all and that doesn't forecast well for long term success to me.
Just my two cents.
