He used to down the diet drinks when he coached at MSU, too. I'm pretty sure he told me he drank Diet Pepsi back then. Now it's apparently Diet Coke - like 16 to 18 a day.
I think he told me he would usually go through about 10 during the course of a game.
This has been a topic on our podcast a few times in the past.
I liked Dave a lot as a person. I thought he had a well-structured offense that was ahead of its time. I thought he coached practice very effectively. But I thought his decision-making would get just a little cloudy in the last 10 minutes of games, and I often wondered if the caffeine thing jittered into the equation a little bit. I don't know.
But anyway, I noticed that he has coached from the sidelines a little more in recent years, and that made me wonder if this prevented him from his usual 10-drink norm during the course of a game.
anyway ... here is a quick story about his "vice" in usatoday:

If you thought John Daly drinks a lot of Diet Coke (10-12 cans per day), you’ve got another thing coming.
In an interview with The Oregonian, Oregon State offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin revealed he consumes even more cans of the soda per day. Many more.
From The Oregonian‘s Gina Mizell:
“Baldwin will gulp back 16-18 cans of diet coke per day, sometimes even awaking in the middle of the night to grab a refreshing swig … This addiction started as a child because Baldwin’s father was diabetic, and has continued at its current staggering rate for the past two decades.”
Baldwin’s explanation for his habit was quite simple.
“Every man has a vice, and if he doesn’t, then he’s lying to you. And this is my vice.”
(Thanks to ESPN for bringing this to our attention.)
