Same crap. Different day.

Once again, a team had a chance to help out the Spartans by handing the Wolverines another conference loss and in the process giving Michigan State a little breathing room. Despite the fact that Michigan put up fewer than 50 points... in the entire game, the Wolverines still came home with a three-point victory. Michigan continues to roll a Yahtzee and their fans think that they are just supremely skilled at rolling dice.

As a result, the two in-state Big Ten schools are once again tied at the top of the standings. Here are the updated odds

Over the weekend, MSU's odds were over 70%, but Michigan's win over Nebraska has caused the odds to tighten such that the Spartans' odds are down to 65% and Michigan odds are close to 60%. There is also a 36% a chance that MSU wins a solo title and a 31% chance that Michigan wins a solo title. Both teams control their own destiny with the final game of the season at the Breslin Center looming large.

The strength of schedule information is shown below:

Both Michigan and Michigan State have relatively challenging remaining schedules. Michigan's schedule is slighlty easier (by 0.17 games) but Michigan State is the better team (based on Kenpom efficiency and the eye-ball test) which is what gives the Spartans the overall edge in odds.

The overall situation has not honestly changed much, however. As long as the Spartans can win two of the next three games, they will have a shot at the Big Ten title simply by beating Michigan at home to close the season. There is also still a 68% chance the Michigan loses at least one game before the season finale, which would give Michigan State even more breathing room.

That said, they just gotta keeping winning, baby, and then it doesn't matter what the boys down the road do in the meantime.
