During the slow time before football kicks off...

We all have our favorite Spartan traditions

What are your favorite - non MSU - college football traditions

To play - 1. you had to attend the festivity- not "I saw on it TV" or"I heard from someone..."

And 2 - it has to be school related - not "we always stop at Bubba's beer joint for a six pack of Schlitz on the way to the game"

Here are some of mine

1. Tailgate at the Grove - Ole Miss - Think about the best tailgate set up you ever saw, tent, roast beast and all the fixings, desserts, open bar all of it. No imagine hundreds lined up next to each other. You have the Grove.

My son and I went on a drizzly Saturday and could literally (and I mean it correctly) for a couple miles without getting wet. The tents were packed and each tent was better than the last. Even though we were going for the opposing team we were welcomed. Amazing. A side trip to downtown Oxford to see Hunter Thompson's crib only added to a great tailgate. Ole Miss says they may not win the game but they will win the tailgate. No truer words...

2. The band takes you into the Stadium - Georgia Tech - the band has a small warm up concert at the Twisty Tower. A natural bowl with the band on one side and fans on the other. They get everyone on the mood and then march about a quarter to half a mile into the stadium. The Wreck and Buzz follow and the fans march with the band into the stadium.

When you finally settle into your seats - the Wreck comes roaring out of the tunnel, past the band, with lovely coeds hanging out the sides. Band lights into a great fight song with the best lyrics (check them out someday - has drinking, gambling and telling your arch rival to go to hell)

3. War Eagle entrance - Auburn - The band gets the crowd into a frenzy and then from the top rafters an eagle circles the stadium several times before landing at midfield to his trainer. Place goes bonkers.

I happened to attend the first game after Auburn won the national title. After the War Eagle made its entrance - up on the Jumbotron Gene Chizik was telling Aubie to be careful with the crystal football (a recruit's Dad had dropped and smashed one during the Spring). Aubie grabs the trophy and then you scan down to the tunnel and Aubie is sprinting to midfield with the trophy in hand. Stadium is electric

Imagine how Spartan Stadium would react if Dantonio handed the trophy off to Sparty - fantastic start to the game.

4. Jump Around - Wisconsin - The game ends. The scoreboard says it's now the 5th quarter and the band starts in with Jump Around. Win or lose the place starts jumping enough to feel like an earthquake in the press box.

Lots of great traditions out there. One of the many reasons I love college football

What are you favorites?
